refactor(sdk): drop the key-wallet-ffi dependency - #5728
Draft, stacked on #5727. The base is #5727's branch, so the diff shows only this PR's two commits. It retargets to v5.1-dev once #5727 merges.
Do not merge before dashpay/dashwallet-ios#1299. This PR deletes Swift KeyWallet API that dashwallet-ios develop still uses. That PR moves the app to the helpers #5727 adds.
Issue being fixed or feature implemented
dashpay/rust-dashcore#776 deletes key-wallet-ffi and the ffi feature of dash-network. Once apps use the platform-wallet-ffi helpers from #5727, nothing in Platform calls key-wallet-ffi any more. This PR removes the dependency, so Platform can bump rust-dashcore past dashpay/rust-dashcore#776 (the draft on top of this one).
What was done?
refactor(sdk)!: drop the key-wallet-ffi dependency:
The Swift KeyWallet classes that only wrapped it are deleted: Wallet, WalletManager, the account, address pool and transaction classes, KeyWalletError, Mnemonic.toSeed and wordCount, Address.getType, and the KeyDerivation path builders, parsePath, createMasterKey and extended key classes.
These stay: Mnemonic (generate, validate, walletId, firstReceiveAddress, the wordlist helpers), KeyDerivation.getIdentityAuthenticationPath, Address.validate, TransactionDecoder, KeyManager and the plain Swift types.
Tests that used the deleted classes now derive through platform_wallet_derive_ext_priv_key_from_mnemonic, read addresses from a throwaway PlatformWalletManager, or check fixed wallet id and address vectors.
refactor(sdk): define FFINetwork in rs-sdk-ffi:FFINetwork came from dash-network behind the ffi feature that chore: remove FFI layer rust-dashcore#776 removes. rs-sdk-ffi now defines the enum and its Network conversions, and every other FFI crate takes it from there. The generated C definition is unchanged (FFINetwork_Mainnet and so on), so Swift and Kotlin need no code change. build_ios.sh stops shipping dash-network.h, and the unused dashcore_network_get_name export goes with it.
How Has This Been Tested?
Platform CI does not run the Rust, Swift and Kotlin jobs for a draft or for a PR whose base is not a v*-dev branch, so these ran locally, all green:
Swift SDK: build_ios.sh --target mac and --target sim, then swift test --filter SwiftDashSDKTests (882 tests, 1 skipped, 0 failures)
Kotlin SDK: ./gradlew :sdk:testDebugUnitTest
Breaking Changes
The deleted Swift KeyWallet classes and methods are no longer part of SwiftDashSDK. Apps move to PlatformWalletManager, Mnemonic.walletId(for:network:), Mnemonic.firstReceiveAddress(for:network:), and ManagedPlatformWallet.findBIP44AddressPath(address:) and bip44AddressPrivateKey(address:storage:). The C and JNI interfaces apps call are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Changes
Removed the Swift SDK’s KeyWallet and WalletManager interfaces, including wallet and account management, address-pool access, mnemonic seed conversion, key derivation, and transaction utilities.
The Swift SDK no longer exposes the associated account, address, and transaction types.
Network enum values remain aligned across the SDK interfaces.
Documentation
Updated network and FFI references across the SDK documentation and contributing guidance.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The change defines FFINetwork in rs-sdk-ffi, removes Swift KeyWallet wrappers and related FFI dependencies, updates JNI network imports, and changes Swift tests to use platform-wallet APIs.
Changes: FFI network contract
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Centralize the FFI network contract packages/rs-sdk-ffi/*, packages/rs-platform-wallet-ffi/*, packages/rs-unified-sdk-ffi/*, Cargo.toml, Kotlin and Swift network references, book/src/contributing/coding-conventions.md
rs-sdk-ffi defines FFINetwork with fixed values and conversions to and from Network. Related crates re-export this type and remove direct dash-network FFI dependencies. Documentation and Kotlin tests identify the new source.
Remove Swift KeyWallet APIs packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/KeyWallet/*, packages/swift-sdk/Package.swift, packages/swift-sdk/CLAUDE.md, packages/swift-sdk/SwiftExampleApp/*
The Swift KeyWallet facade, wallet and account wrappers, derivation and transaction APIs, FFI-backed models, documentation, and example script are removed.
Update crate dependencies and JNI imports packages/rs-unified-sdk-jni/*, packages/rs-unified-sdk-ffi/*, packages/swift-sdk/build_ios.sh
JNI network imports use FFINetwork from rs-sdk-ffi; existing integer-to-network mappings remain unchanged. The build script no longer includes the removed crate headers.
Update Swift tests to use platform wallet APIs packages/swift-sdk/SwiftTests/SwiftDashSDKIntegrationTests/Core/*, packages/swift-sdk/SwiftTests/SwiftDashSDKTests/*
Tests replace KeyWallet-based address and key derivation with PlatformWalletManager or platform-wallet FFI calls. Mnemonic tests check reference master keys and pinned wallet IDs and addresses.
The dependency removal has no established new blocker in the supplied evidence. The existing mnemonic-validation concern remains open for follow-up; coordinate the breaking Swift API removal with the app migration before merging.

Explanation
The title "refactor(sdk): drop the key-wallet-ffi dependency" matches the main change. The PR removes the key-wallet-ffi dependency from the unified SDK FFI and deletes the Swift KeyWallet wrappers that relied on it. The title is short, specific, and follows a conventional commit style. It does not mention the breaking removal of the Swift KeyWallet API, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Reject NUL bytes in createWallet(mnemonic:) before the C-string conversion.
createWallet(mnemonic:) passes the phrase to Rust through withCString with no NUL check. Rust reads the phrase up to the first NUL, so a phrase with an appended NUL and junk creates a wallet from the valid prefix. The new masterKey helper and testGibberishStillThrows do not cover this input.

for valid mnemonics.
The original comment's wording "the same derivation code" is too strong. The two sides share the key_wallet BIP-32 library. They do not call one function. The finding is a test-coverage gap, not a defect in the production code. The original classification as a functional-correctness nitpick is too low for a pinned-vector gap on a signing key path. A recommended refactor label fits. Pin the identity-authentication public key to a fixed vector.
derivePublicKey(path:) and the signing resolver both derive keys through the same key_wallet BIP-32 code. The row stores the helper's output as the expected key. A regression in that shared derivation therefore changes the expected key and the signing key together. Both tests still pass, and the only assertion on the key is its length.
Add a hard-coded compressed public key for the test mnemonic at the identity-authentication path that this test derives. Generate that value with an independent BIP-32 implementation, not with derivePublicKey, so the test does not check the code against itself. Assert the derived bytes against that constant.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The replacement for explicit address-range derivation only reads existing pool rows. If default-account creation does not eagerly persist ten external addresses, it cannot obtain the requested range.
The integration test fails with the address-count setup error instead of exercising wallet-history recovery.
This can occur when: A new throwaway wallet has a BIP-44 account but its external pool is populated lazily.

@coderabbitai re the NUL-byte finding on createWallet(mnemonic:): agreed, the phrase should be checked with KeyDerivation.requireNoNUL before the C-string conversion. This PR does not touch PlatformWalletManager.swift, so the gap already exists on v5.1-dev. The finding is anchored here only because the new tests call createWallet(mnemonic:). I filed it as #5758 to fix separately.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.
@xdustinface Agreed. The NUL-byte validation gap is valid, but your clarification places it outside this PR’s changes. #5758 tracks the fix to call KeyDerivation.requireNoNUL before the C-string conversion. No change is needed in this PR for that finding.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Static verification confirmed three non-blocking documentation, naming, and ABI-test coverage issues; no blocking correctness or layering defect was confirmed. Kotlin build/tests and the Swift frozen-schema check passed, Rust workspace tests remain pending, and the Swift SDK build was skipped; the failing PR Hygiene check is policy-only. The documented dashwallet-ios#1299 landing prerequisite remains open.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — This is a broad cross-language API removal and dependency refactor, but the diff does not introduce or alter cryptographic algorithms, production key derivation, funds movement, or consensus logic.
These findings are from an automated code review. Verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed.
In `packages/rs-sdk-ffi/src/types.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk-ffi/src/types.rs:45-77: Newly owned FFINetwork has no ABI-pinning test
The relocated enum and both conversions correctly match the pinned upstream implementation, but their compatibility contract is not covered by a Rust test. NetworkTest.kt pins Kotlin's constants, and the JNI mapping test compares named Rust variants; neither detects a change to the Rust discriminants or the Network conversions. Add a table-driven test asserting the four FFINetwork numeric values and each expected conversion in both directions. This would protect the unchanged C ABI promised by this migration without requiring a mobile build.
In `packages/swift-sdk/CLAUDE.md`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/CLAUDE.md:90-94: Anti-precedent cites a KeyDerivation.privateKey method that does not exist
The rewritten example names `KeyDerivation.privateKey(mnemonic:path:)`, but KeyDerivation exposes no such method. Although this is an example of prohibited orchestration, using a nonexistent concrete API makes the migration guidance misleading. Reference `platform_wallet_derive_ext_priv_key_from_mnemonic`, which the rewritten tests actually use, or describe the derivation step generically while preserving the warning against orchestrating it in Swift.
In `packages/kotlin-sdk/sdk/src/test/kotlin/org/dashfoundation/dashsdk/NetworkTest.kt`:
- [NITPICK] packages/kotlin-sdk/sdk/src/test/kotlin/org/dashfoundation/dashsdk/NetworkTest.kt:11: Test name still references the old dash-network FFI home
The adjacent source reference now correctly points to rs-sdk-ffi, but the test name still identifies dash-network as the owner of the FFI enum. Rename it to match the relocated contract.
Nothing calls `key-wallet-ffi` any more once apps use the `platform-wallet-ffi` helpers, so the workspace no longer depends on it. That unblocks bumping rust-dashcore past dashpay/rust-dashcore#776, which deletes the crate.
- `rs-unified-sdk-ffi` no longer links it, and `build_ios.sh` no longer ships its header
- the Swift `KeyWallet` classes that only wrapped it are deleted: `Wallet`, `WalletManager`, the account, address pool and transaction classes, `KeyWalletError`, `Mnemonic.toSeed` / `wordCount`, `Address.getType`, and the `KeyDerivation` path builders, `parsePath`, `createMasterKey` and extended key classes
- `Mnemonic` (`generate`, `validate`, `walletId`, `firstReceiveAddress`, the wordlist helpers), `KeyDerivation.getIdentityAuthenticationPath`, `Address.validate`, `TransactionDecoder`, `KeyManager` and the plain Swift types stay
- tests that used the deleted classes now derive through `platform_wallet_derive_ext_priv_key_from_mnemonic`, read addresses from a throwaway `PlatformWalletManager`, or check fixed wallet id and address vectors
The deleted Swift `KeyWallet` classes and methods are no longer part of `SwiftDashSDK`. Apps move to `PlatformWalletManager`, `Mnemonic.walletId(for:network:)`, `Mnemonic.firstReceiveAddress(for:network:)`, and `ManagedPlatformWallet.findBIP44AddressPath(address:)` and `bip44AddressPrivateKey(address:storage:)`.
`FFINetwork` came from rust-dashcore's `dash-network` crate behind its `ffi` feature, which dashpay/rust-dashcore#776 removes together with `key-wallet-ffi`. `rs-sdk-ffi` now defines the enum and its `Network` conversions itself, and every other FFI crate takes it from there.
The generated C definition is unchanged (`FFINetwork_Mainnet` and so on), so Swift and Kotlin need no code change. `build_ios.sh` stops shipping `dash-network.h`, and nothing enables `dash-network`'s `ffi` feature any more. Its unused `dashcore_network_get_name` export goes with it.

Looks good to me. This can be merged once dashpay/dashwallet-ios#1299 is merged and the required CI checks pass. Please keep that merge order: #1299 moves the iOS app off the KeyWallet APIs that this PR removes.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete diff at 56e4ea2 and found no actionable in-scope issues; all three prior findings are fixed. The relocated FFINetwork preserves its ABI values, conversions, and generated C names, and the dependency removal matches the linked upstream migration. Review was static only: exact-head Rust workspace, Swift SDK, and Kotlin SDK CI checks pass; PR Hygiene remains pending, and the documented do-not-merge-before dashpay/dashwallet-ios#1299 prerequisite remains open.
Triage: normal by gpt-6.1-sol (effort low) — This is a cross-language API removal and dependency refactor, but the diff does not introduce intricate changes to cryptography or key-handling algorithms; its main correctness concerns are compatibility and preserving FFINetwork conversions in packages/rs-sdk-ffi/src/types.rs.
