fix(walletconnect): sign in to dApps with hardware wallets - #12737
Conversation
WalletConnect sign-in (SIWE) from dApps such as Venice failed on every non-native wallet. - hex encode utf8 messages in EvmBaseAdapter.signMessage, hdwallets other than native reject non-hex messages - pass hex: true to TrezorConnect so the message bytes are signed rather than the hex text, and throw when no signature is returned - skip session_authenticate for KeepKey and Trezor, their 1024 byte message cap is below the SIWE + ReCaps message size, so the dApp's fallback session proposal is used instead - include chains in approved session namespaces, AppKit falls back to mainnet without it - respond to unsupported session requests instead of dropping them, the sign client holds back later requests until each is answered - reject the session auth request when approval fails - stringify non-Error objects in ChainAdapterError Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

check that the caught value is an Error with a non-empty message, and use the

…r paths - build the session_authenticate iss with an EIP-55 checksummed address, as EIP-4361 requires - update the mocked Trezor ethereumSignMessage call for hex: true so the hdwallet integration test matches the request - fall back to String when a thrown object can't be serialized in ChainAdapterError - close the session auth modal even when rejecting the request fails, and read the error message without an unchecked cast Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Description
WalletConnect sign-in (SIWE) from dApps such as venice.ai failed on every non-native wallet. Connecting ShapeShift to Venice threw
data is not an hex string, and once that was fixed KeepKey and Trezor One still could not sign in.Message signing
EvmBaseAdapter.signMessagenow hex encodes utf8 messages. Every hdwallet other than native rejects a non-hex message, and the WalletConnectsession_authenticate(one-click auth) handler passed the SIWE message as plain text.hdwallet-trezorpasseshex: trueto TrezorConnect so the message bytes are signed rather than the hex text. It also throws when no signature comes back, instead of returning0xundefined.iss) is built with an EIP-55 checksummed address, as EIP-4361 requires. It was lowercase before.KeepKey and Trezor
EthereumSignMessage.messageat 1024 bytes. The one-click auth message embeds the session permissions (ReCaps) and was 2055 bytes for Venice, so these devices cannot sign it.session_authenticatelistener. The sign client then handles the dApp's fallback session proposal, and the dApp follows up with a regularpersonal_signsign-in message that fits.Session approval
chains. AppKit's WalletConnect connector readssession.namespaces.eip155.chainsand falls back to mainnet without it, which left Base-only Venice on "This app doesn't support your current network".Hardening
ChainAdapterErrorstringifies non-Error objects, so a thrown device failure event reads as its contents instead of[object Object].Issue (if applicable)

Risk

Tested manually against venice.ai (token page, connect with WalletConnect, paste the URI into ShapeShift):

Unit tests added for the hex encoding in
