This is just a #793 rebased on main, analogous to how at graphql-js graphql/graphql-js#3814 is just the rebased version of graphql/graphql-js#3049.
Although since it's just one PR in the stack, perhaps this PR should just be closed and that one rebased.
For ease of rebasing, I squashed all of commits in the original into one commit.
