Instead of printing a lot of dots (and X) on the screen to show the progress, which fills the screen for larger images, I propose an additional progress monitor.
For normal operation:
I assume that from the input image file width and height you can derive the needed number of thumbnails required to cover it.
Statistics:
Input image: 800x600 pixels (480.000 pixels)
Thumbnail size: 50x50 (2.500 pixels)
Progress:
19/192 (10%) done
For collage mode (-c):
As I don't know how this is calculated, I cannot offer a solution, but I am sure there is one.
