Early-stage alpha: Menagerist is at the very beginning of development. The project structure, features, API, data model, and documentation are all expected to change frequently.
Menagerist is a new self-hostable project for organising collections as a flexible, graph-esque system of nodes and edges. Rather than forcing everything into a fixed set of categories, Menagerist is intended to let you model the things you care about — items, people, events, places, photos, signatures, appearances, notes, and more — as connected records.
Menagerist is currently in its initial project setup phase.
At this stage, the focus is on defining the core concepts, shaping the node-and-edge data model, and building the first usable foundation. Expect rough edges, missing features, and breaking changes while the project takes shape.
Menagerist aims to support:
- Nodes — flexible records for items, people, events, places, media, notes, or other collection-related concepts
- Edges — meaningful relationships between nodes, such as signed by, attended, photographed at, appears in, belongs to, or related to
- Customisable types and metadata for different kinds of collections
- Uploading and linking photos or other media
- Searching and browsing connected records
- Optional imports from CSV/Excel in the future
- A simple, intuitive web interface for managing your collections
- A simple, clean API
- A focus on privacy, security, and data ownership
- Optional metadata enhanments e.g. TMDB, MusicBrainz, etc. in the future
- Easy self-hosting
Menagerist is inspired by the idea of a menagerie — a carefully curated collection. It’s designed to make organizing, linking, and preserving your collections simple and meaningful.
