lectures-on-advanced-control-engineering

MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape material prepared for the Advanced Control Engineering lectures held at MCI (academic years 2019–2023) and still maintained: worked examples of state-space design, observers, Kalman filtering, optimal and model predictive control, nonlinear observers and adaptive control, applied to power electronics, electrical drives, mechatronic systems and hydrostatic/hydraulic powertrains. The theory and the discussion of most of these projects is in the companion LaTeX repository advanced-control-engineering.

Prerequisites

  • MATLAB with Simulink and Simscape (Simscape Electrical, Driveline, Fluids and Multibody are used by some projects).
  • The companion library repository on the MATLAB path with subfolders. It provides the Simscape (.ssc) components compiled with ssc_build (library/foundation), the C functions used by the C-Caller blocks (library/user_defined_functions/ccaller) and the setup/data scripts called by the init files. Documentation of the shared components lives there.
  • A few projects carry their own local Simscape components (+name packages and *_lib.slx libraries next to the model); build them with ssc_build from that folder if the library block is missing.

How to use a project

Each project folder contains an initialization script (init*.m, *_init.m, control_design.m or init.mlx), one or more Simulink models and, where present, a plotting script:

  1. run the init script — it defines the plant parameters, designs the controller/observer gains (acker, place, lqr, dlqr, discretization) and prints/plots the design checks;
  2. open and simulate the .slx;
  3. run plotting*.m to produce the figures (EPS with LaTeX labels, the same used in the lecture notes).

Older projects keep the design date in the file name (init_2021_03_10.m, hdv_ctrl_2021_06_12.slx, ...); when several versions exist the most recent date is the reference one.

Repository layout

Folder Content
advanced_control_engineering The lecture projects (35 folders): state feedback and observers, Kalman filters, LQR/LQI, MPC, nonlinear observers, adaptive control, phase portraits, applied to drives, converters, actuators, vehicles and hydrostatic systems
hydraulic_control_systems Heavy-duty vehicle with hydrostatic powertrain (engine, pumps, motors, blade actuator, anti-stall, battery) and a tracked-vehicle driveline control
cooling_systems Liquid cooling loop (Simscape Fluids): centrifugal pump, pipes, accumulator — flow and pressure sizing
em FDTD simulation of a 1D electromagnetic standing wave (MATLAB script + LaTeX report, in Italian)

Each folder has its own README with a project-by-project description.
