Travis advises to prefer them and they start up much quicker compared to full
VMs.

This is now possible because
travis-ci/apt-package-safelist#3895 has been
resolved.

the containers are much faster. I'm glad to see they got our packages merged.

Side note: I wonder if we can use their caching mechanism to make building notmuch faster?

Yes we can try to use that two. Feel free to try it. I will try to work on #894 first.
