refactor(test): reference live tax codes in subscription example inputs - #5385
Subscription test fixtures now reference a real tax code by TaxCodeID instead of carrying a hardcoded Stripe tax code (txcd_10000000).
Why
With only a Stripe code on the example rate cards, every subscription test went through the legacy path where the services resolve the Stripe code into a tax code. Test inputs should use tax code IDs, the way rate cards will once provider codes are gone.
How
Each test creates the tax code during setup and passes its config to the builders. The builders don't touch the database:
New in openmeter/subscription/testutils/taxcode.go:
GetExampleTaxCodeInput(): input for TaxCodeEnv.CreateTaxCode with a Stripe mapping to txcd_10000000, so items still end up with the Stripe code the examples used. Pass your own CreateTaxCodeInput to change the key, name or mappings.
ExampleTaxConfig(taxCode): a TaxConfig with the tax code's ID and Exclusive behavior. Set Behavior on the result if a test needs something else.
Builder changes:
GetExamplePlanInput(t, taxConfig) takes the tax config for its taxed rate cards.
ExampleRateCard1, ExampleRateCard3ForAddons and ExampleRateCardWithDiscounts are functions that take a TaxConfig and return a new rate card on every call, so callers don't need .Clone().
Plan versions that are expected to compare equal must share one tax code, because rate card equality compares TaxCodeID. With different codes, a migration would replace every taxed item instead of keeping it. That's why:
The migration fixture in test/subscription/migrate_test.go creates the tax code during setup and keeps its config, so newPlanVersion() and target plans reference the same code as the original plan. newMigrationFixtureWithPlan takes a plan builder function, because the tax code only exists after setup.
Tests that build several plan versions create the tax code once and reuse the config.
Other changes:
TestTaxCodeResolution covers the legacy Stripe-only input by passing a Stripe-only config to GetExamplePlanInput.
patch_test runs in memory and passes a config with a placeholder tax code ID.
The compare helpers (ValidateSpecAndView, SpecsEqual, and the addon diff assertions) compare tax by TaxCodeID and behavior. They ignore the Stripe code, which the services fill in from the tax code's mapping.
productcatalog/testutils.NewTestPlan is untaxed by default; WithRateCardTaxCode(tc) adds a tax code. This replaces the withoutTaxConfig helpers in the adapter tests.
subscription/addon/service tests use the shared subscriptiontestutils.CreatePlanWithAddon instead of a private copy with the same body.
Notes
Tax behavior: the example rate cards now have Exclusive behavior; previously they had none.
Stripe pairing: a desired spec with only a TaxCodeID compares as different from a stored item that also has the Stripe code. Plans created through the plan service already have the Stripe code filled in, so these tests don't hit this, but it matters for specs built by hand.
Scope: test-only. No test cases are added or removed; only their setup changes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Expanded coverage of tax-configured plans, rate cards, subscriptions, add-ons, and migrations across billing workflows.
Updated subscription scenarios for plan changes, cancellations, scheduled updates, and add-on restoration to use tax codes consistently.
Added checks for add-on currency mismatches and invoice-currency assignment when an update makes an item billable, alongside coverage for missing features and migration behavior.

Summary
Subscription fixtures now create live tax codes and pass TaxCodeID into plan and rate-card builders.
Subscription tests build taxed plans from tax-code IDs.
Test comparisons match tax-code identity without requiring an unknown Stripe code.
Example builders make fresh rate cards with a supplied tax config.
Product catalog test plans are untaxed unless a test adds a tax code.

Walkthrough
The pull request updates shared test utilities and test cases across product-catalog and subscription code. Tests create tax codes, use tax-configurable rate cards and plan inputs, and compare rate cards with conditional handling of legacy Stripe tax codes.
Changes: Tax-aware subscription test fixtures
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared tax fixtures and comparisons openmeter/productcatalog/testutils/plan.go, openmeter/subscription/testutils/*
Test utilities add tax-code setup, configurable example rate cards and plan inputs, a rate-card tax-code transformer, and comparison logic for Stripe tax codes.
Product-catalog and API tests api/v3/handlers/subscriptions/*, openmeter/productcatalog/plan/adapter/*_test.go, openmeter/productcatalog/planaddon/adapter/*_test.go, openmeter/productcatalog/subscription/service/*_test.go
Tests pass tax configurations to plan fixtures and use tax-configured rate cards. Plan adapter tests retain default fixture tax configuration.
Subscription add-on, service, and workflow tests openmeter/subscription/addon/*, openmeter/subscription/service/*_test.go, openmeter/subscription/workflow/service/*_test.go
Tests pass tax configurations through plan setup and use shared plan helpers. Several item lookups use feature keys. Add-on apply tests add coverage for a custom-currency mismatch.
Migration and billing scenario tests test/subscription/*_test.go
Migration fixtures pass tax configurations into plan builders. Billing scenarios use shared example tax configurations instead of inline Stripe tax configurations.

Keep the Stripe code when TaxCodeID is absent.
If two rate cards have different Stripe-only tax configs, this helper clears their only tax-code identities. SpecsEqual can then report those cards as equal. Clear Stripe only when TaxCodeID identifies the tax code; otherwise compare the Stripe codes. The domain model accepts Stripe-only configs and uses their codes to resolve tax-code IDs. …n builders
Tests create the example tax code once with TaxCodeEnv.CreateTaxCode and
GetExampleTaxCodeInput, then pass ExampleTaxConfig(taxCode) to the pure
GetExamplePlanInput and rate card builders. The builders no longer read
or write the database.

Reviewed the fixture changes. The mechanical swaps look right and CI is green. The comments below are mostly about what the new compare helpers stop asserting, plus a suggestion to move the tax code setup into the shared harness.

The "Stripe pairing" note in the description looks like a production issue that these helpers hide. Sync and migration diffs go through RateCard.Equal, so a desired spec with only a TaxCodeID (built by hand or from the API) differs from the stored item that has ID + backfilled Stripe, and the item gets replaced instead of kept.
MergeTaxConfigs already treats Stripe and TaxCodeID as one identity. Should TaxConfig.Equal ignore Stripe when both sides have a TaxCodeID? That fixes it at the root, and this helper and its copy in addon/diff/apply_test.go could go away. Probably a separate PR, but it'd be good to track.

The CreateTaxCode + ExampleTaxConfig pair is now repeated 114 times. AGENTS.md says: "Hardcode suite-wide behavior into the shared harness instead of exposing per-test knobs." There's a precedent: NewService already provisions the example meter and exposes deps.ExampleMeterID. Creating the example tax code there and exposing deps.ExampleTaxConfig would:
remove all the copies,
make plan versions share one code by default, so tests no longer have to remember it,
let newMigrationFixtureWithPlan take a plain plan.CreatePlanInput again instead of a builder func.
One caveat: TestTaxCodeResolution looks the code up by its Stripe mapping. With a pre-provisioned txcd_10000000 code it would find that one instead of exercising auto-creation, so that test would need a different Stripe code.

I'd rather not build on the ExampleMeterID pattern. Pre-provisioning shared fixtures in NewService hides which tests depend on them, and it already forces exceptions like the TestTaxCodeResolution one you mention. Each test creating the tax code it uses is more repetitive, but you can see the dependency where the test sets up. If the repetition becomes a problem, I'd fix it with a small builder rather than state in the harness.

Keep Stripe tax codes visible for untaxed expectations.
When expectedMeta.TaxConfig is nil, this branch also removes a Stripe-only config from found. RateCardsEqual then accepts a taxed card as equal to an untaxed card. Limit this normalization to expectations with a TaxCodeID and no Stripe code. This keeps the intended backfill exception without hiding a tax mismatch. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
