Description

Cherry-picks the CVE-2026-18618 fix from RHOAIENG-70594-rhoai-3.5 onto midstream/master.

  • Upgrade bundled gRPC from 1.46.3 to 1.58.3 and protobuf to 23.4 to address published HTTP/2 DoS CVEs
  • Bump Bazel to 6.3.2 and update related WORKSPACE dependencies (platforms, sqlite, googletest, zlib, ZetaSQL)
  • Add ZetaSQL protobuf 23 compatibility patch so filter_query continues to work
  • Apply upb fortify warning suppressions and arm64/ppc64le build fixes in Dockerfile.redhat

How Has This Been Tested?

Merge criteria:

  • The commits are squashed in a cohesive manner and have meaningful messages.
  • Testing instructions have been added in the PR body (for PRs involving changes that are not immediately obvious).
  • The developer has manually tested the changes and verified that the changes work

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build and Compatibility
    • Updated the project’s build tooling and supporting libraries for improved compatibility with current Bazel and Protocol Buffers versions.
    • Added build support for x86_64, aarch64, and ppc64le container architectures.
    • Improved handling of protocol definitions and well-known types across C++, Python, and Go builds.
    • Updated SQLite, zlib, gRPC, GoogleTest, ZetaSQL, and related components, including security and compatibility fixes.
    • Refreshed platform detection for macOS builds.

Bump gRPC to 1.58.3, protobuf to 23.4, Bazel to 6.3.2, and zlib to 1.3.1,
with a ZetaSQL patch for protobuf 23 compatibility so filter_query keeps working.

Install Bazel 6.3.2 in Konflux Dockerfile for .bazelversion pin

Provide Bazel 6.3.2 binaries for COPR bazel wrapper on all Konflux arches

Use community Bazel 6.3.2 binary for ppc64le Konflux builds

Install aarch64 Bazel binary under name expected by COPR wrapper

Suppress upb fortify-source false positives on ppc64le Bazel builds

Walkthrough

The change sets Bazel 6.3.2 and upgrades several external dependencies, including gRPC 1.58.3 for CVE-2024-7246. It migrates protobuf generation to modern Bazel rules, updates well-known type dependencies, and removes legacy C++ API settings. It updates ZetaSQL protobuf compatibility checks and applies the patch. It adds architecture-specific Bazel installation and compiler flags to the Red Hat Dockerfile. The WORKSPACE ZetaSQL block contains unresolved merge-conflict markers.

The current change cannot build until the WORKSPACE conflict is resolved. The container toolchain selection and supply-chain safeguards also need correction before merge.

Clean DNF metadata before closing the builder layer.

The changed install step leaves DNF metadata and cache files in the builder layer. Add dnf clean all and remove /var/cache/dnf after installation. Trivy reports this as DS-0019.

bazel build invocation runs. Update the invalid declaration or expression in
WORKSPACE so Bazel can load it successfully, while preserving the existing build
configuration and dependencies.
- Around line 35-36: Add verification of the downloaded Bazel artifact in the
Docker build before it is executable or used: validate it against an audited
per-architecture SHA-256 checksum or signature, then retain the existing
installation flow only after verification succeeds. Update the download block
around BAZEL_BIN and BAZEL_URL without changing unrelated build steps.
- Around line 35-36: The Dockerfile currently downloads Bazel to the
architecture-specific BAZEL_BIN path while build commands resolve /usr/bin/bazel
from the bazel5 package. Update the Bazel installation step to make the
downloaded Bazel 6.3.2 binary available as /usr/bin/bazel, or update build
invocations to use the downloaded BAZEL_BIN path, ensuring Bazel 6.3.2 is
selected.

exactly one valid `ZETASQL_COMMIT` configuration block so Bazel can evaluate the

Verify the Bazel artifact before installation (CWE-494).

${BAZEL_BIN} is downloaded into /usr/bin and later runs during bazel build as root. Add an audited per-architecture SHA-256 or signature check before installation.

Select the downloaded Bazel 6.3.2 binary. The bazel5 package provides /usr/bin/bazel, while the downloaded binary has an architecture-specific filename. The bazel build command therefore uses Bazel 5. Install the download as /usr/bin/bazel or invoke its absolute path.
