docs: say a config fragment cannot install a Codex profile, and how to keep one - #2604
Someone giving a Codex member a named profile finds, in the docs they're already reading, that a config fragment can't install the profile. They also find how to keep a profile when they want full access or an OpenRig-recorded posture.
The change (docs only)
agent-spec.md, "Writing a codex_config_fragment": a fragment can't install a named Codex profile.
Codex reads each profile from its own <CODEX_HOME>/<name>.config.toml, with top-level keys. It won't load one while config.toml holds a legacy [profiles.<name>] table.
A fragment only adds tables to config.toml, so neither form works there.
The section now points to the separate profile file plus the member's codex_config_profile, and to the existing check that a selected profile loads.
getting-started.md, where builtin:yolo replaces the profile argument: that drops the whole profile, not just its sandbox and approval settings. The two ways to keep a profile:
Full access set in the profile itself, with permission_policy absent (the recipe already on that page).
A workspace-write or read-only codex_permissions envelope. OpenRig passes -p and adds the envelope's flags, and for that seat the envelope replaces a policy posture such as builtin:yolo.
Full access isn't an envelope.
rig-spec.md, the codex_config_profile row: the same two ways, in one sentence.
Checked against source
codex_config_fragment writes only into config.toml, and keys before a table are refused.
The profile check runs codex -p <name> mcp list and, for a legacy table, names <CODEX_HOME>/<name>.config.toml.
With a codex_permissions envelope, the launch is -p <name> plus the envelope's flags. Without one, a full-bypass posture emits only -s danger-full-access -a never.
The envelope accepts only workspace-write or read-only, and refuses danger-full-access ("full access is the full_bypass mode, not an envelope").
No behaviour or contract changes. No test reads these lines.
…o keep one
A codex_config_fragment only adds tables to config.toml, so it can't
install a named Codex profile: Codex reads each profile from its own
<name>.config.toml with top-level keys and won't load one while a legacy
[profiles.<name>] table is present. Say so in the fragment section and
point to the separate profile file and codex_config_profile.
Where the docs say builtin:yolo replaces the profile, say that it drops
the whole profile and name the two ways to keep one: full access set in
the profile itself with permission_policy absent, or a workspace-write or
read-only codex_permissions envelope, which keeps -p and adds its flags.
Full access is not an envelope.
The reference documentation now explains how to create and select Codex named profiles, how legacy tables affect profile loading, and how permission settings affect profile arguments.

Older Codex versions may fail to launch with the documented profile setup, and missing profile settings can go unnoticed. The documentation should clarify both cases.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Require removing the full-bypass policy.
Putting full access in the profile does not retain the profile while the full-bypass policy remains active: OpenRig still omits -p. Tell readers to remove or replace that policy when using this option. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Qualify the profile-file requirement by Codex version.
Codex 0.130.0 reads named profiles from [profiles.<name>]. If a user creates only the separate file, preflight can pass but the profile launch can fail. Scope this guidance to Codex 0.134.0 and later, and tell users of older versions to upgrade.

Clarify that preflight accepts a missing profile file.
The native probe succeeds when <name>.config.toml is absent, and base configuration applies instead. State this exception so users do not mistake a successful check for proof that their profile settings were loaded. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Approved at d42cbbf. The docs now say that a Codex config fragment can't install a named profile (create the profile file and select it with codex_config_profile), that builtin:yolo drops the whole profile, and how to keep one: full access inside the profile with no permission policy, or a workspace-write or read-only codex_permissions envelope. Required CI passes at this head.
