What a user gets

An agent that wants to hand a bounded task to Claude Code or Codex can do it today with rig acp run and the maintained ACP adapters. This page tells them which packages to install, what runs, how permissions work, and what the row's outcome does and doesn't prove.

The change

docs/reference/acp-agents.md gets one new section, "Claude Code and Codex, through their ACP adapters". The rest of the page is unchanged.

  • What it covers:
    • install and run: @agentclientprotocol/claude-agent-acp 0.101.0 and @agentclientprotocol/codex-acp 2.5.0, installed once (npx adds about 10 s a turn);
    • native versions:
      • Claude Code runs through the Agent SDK 0.3.318. With CLAUDE_CODE_EXECUTABLE set, it uses that claude; otherwise it uses the SDK's platform binary, which declares 2.1.318.
      • Codex comes from @openai/codex ^0.165.0, and npm ls shows what resolved.
    • the deprecated names: the @zed-industries packages are named as replaced;
    • permissions: each agent keeps its own mode, and in the check neither asked anything (Claude auto, Codex workspace-write). The page says how to make each one ask, as the caller's choice, not a recommended default;
    • how the answers differ: Claude's reject lets the turn continue, while Codex's only refusal, cancel, ends the turn;
    • a missing session: both refuse and start nothing, with different codes (-32002, -32603). Neither code by itself means a missing session;
    • a completed turn isn't finished work: the observed case is a background task that died after a completed turn;
    • cancel: a cancel acknowledgement isn't a finished shutdown;
    • usage and cost: they're in the run's log file, not on the row;
    • what wasn't checked.
  • What it doesn't cover: a background (nohup) recipe. It isn't a durable way to run detached, so it isn't offered.

Where the facts come from

  • One trial run of each adapter under rig acp run, on OpenRig 0.7.8, on 2026-11-06:
    • one small file task per case;
    • models claude-haiku-5-5 and gpt-6.1-sol at low effort.
  • The npm registry, for package versions, dependencies and deprecations.
  • The published adapter source (dist/claude-cli.js in claude-agent-acp 0.101.0), for how the Claude binary is chosen.
  • packages/cli/src/acp/connector.ts, for what the run's log file holds: every JSON-RPC packet, both directions.

Scope

  • Text only. The reference context pack links this file through a symlink, so it ships unchanged.
  • No behaviour change, no new default, and no claim beyond the checked cases. The page lists those cases.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a reference guide for using the Claude Code and Codex ACP adapters with OpenRig 0.7.8, covering installation, invocation, checked adapter and model versions, executable and login configuration, and permission modes.
    • The guide also covers differing refusal outcomes, session continuation and invalid-session errors, background tasks, cancellation and process settlement, usage reporting, and cases that were not checked.

…apters

Add a section to the ACP agents guide for the maintained adapters,
@agentclientprotocol/claude-agent-acp 0.101.0 and
@agentclientprotocol/codex-acp 2.5.0, as checked on OpenRig 0.7.8:
how to install and run them, which native versions they run, how each
agent's own permission mode decides what it asks, how their answers and
missing-session errors differ, and what a completed turn, a cancel and
the reported usage do and don't show. The deprecated zed package names
are named as replaced.

This text-only change documents the Claude Code and Codex ACP adapters. A few instructions could mislead readers: relative installation paths, the login needed for a dedicated Claude configuration directory, and the Codex permission options. These can be fixed with small wording edits and do not affect runtime behavior, so the change is safe to merge once they are addressed or accepted.

Use an absolute installation path.

If <dir> is relative and --cwd names another directory, the connector resolves this PATH entry from the work folder and cannot find the adapter. Require an absolute <dir> or expand it before exporting PATH. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

**Permissions.** Each agent keeps its own permission mode, and OpenRig adds no restriction. In the check, neither
asked anything for file writes or shell commands: Claude started in `auto` mode and Codex in `workspace-write`. To
have the agent ask, so that each request becomes a permission row:
- **Claude:** give it a dedicated `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` whose settings set `permissions.defaultMode` to `"default"`.

Include authentication setup for the dedicated directory.

A fresh CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR does not inherit a claude.ai login from the default directory. Users following this instruction can therefore lose authentication instead of reaching a permission request. Tell them to authenticate with that directory before running the adapter. (code.claude.com)

- **Codex** offers `allow_once`, `accept_execpolicy_amendment` (allow always) and `cancel`. Its only refusal, `cancel`,
ends the whole turn, and the outcome is `cancelled`.

Scope these options to the observed request.

Codex options vary by request. File-change approvals offer allow_for_session, and command approvals can offer decline, which rejects the command without ending the turn. The current wording can lead an owner to cancel a turn unnecessarily. Describe these as the options observed in the check and direct owners to the options on each permission row. The 20-30 ms cancel acknowledgement was measured with the agent waiting
on a permission answer; say so, and that a cancel mid-generation or
mid-tool was not timed. Say that long and background work were not
checked beyond the one observed case, and what happens when the Claude
binary is left out and CLAUDE_CODE_EXECUTABLE is not set.

Approved at 6071582. docs/reference/acp-agents.md now shows how to run Claude Code and Codex through rig acp run with their maintained ACP adapters: the install, the native versions that actually run, how each agent's own permission mode decides whether it asks, how answers and cancel behave, and what was and wasn't checked. Required CI passes at this head.
