What a user gets

Consumed tmux launch scripts first use /bin/rm, with its error output suppressed, then fall back to rm from the receiving shell's PATH if absolute cleanup fails. Cleanup is best-effort: even if neither route succeeds, a sourced shell using set -e still reaches the launch command. Absolute cleanup preserves the existing deletion behavior when available; command rm bypasses shell aliases/functions in the fallback. The quoted filename, -f --, and exec launch behavior are preserved.

How you verified it

Candidate 8f34d94e0b1744f98493f4c752e8c8ea7595d99f, based on main acd1c2c3:

  • All 40 shell-launch tests passed both with and without absolute cleanup available. Three updated ordering checks fail on the previous PATH-first tip 41b9c6e6 when absolute cleanup is available, then pass on this candidate.
  • Independent review passed 58 checks: 40 product tests plus 18 native shell controls. They cover absolute success bypassing PATH, missing/nonzero absolute cleanup falling back to PATH, suppression of only the absolute command's error output, both routes missing/failing, exact quoted-path arguments, function/alias bypass, one payload execution, and preservation of payload exit status 37 across ordinary, sourced, and exec modes under errexit. Six selected ordering controls fail on 41b9c6e6.
  • npm run build and npm run lint passed on this exact commit. Full local npm test exited 1: 21,896 passed, one failed, 11 skipped, and five todo (repository: 293 passed/one skipped; daemon: 16,174 passed/one failed/six skipped/five todo; CLI: 4,448 passed/four skipped; TUI: 981 passed). The failure was test/exact-session-probe.test.ts: its private tmux server exited unexpectedly during startup. That test passed in a separate isolated rerun on this same candidate. The full run is not claimed as passing; the startup failure has no proven root cause. All ten latest-head CI checks passed.

Anything you were unsure about

A cleanup failure can leave the private script behind, but does not retry or suppress the launch command. Unconsumed scripts remain available for diagnosis; there is no sweep of old files. Native shell controls use mocked tmux transport. Actual fish execution, a provider session, a separate installed-package scenario, and the web UI test suite were not run locally. Existing fish-selection/fallback controls pass; maintainer-reported fish behavior remains separate from these local results. PATH cleanup diagnostics are not suppressed.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • I listed the checks I ran, their results, and any checks I could not run

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved cleanup of temporary launch scripts. The system now tries an alternate removal method if its primary method is unavailable or fails, and continues launching the requested command even if cleanup cannot be completed.

📝 Walkthrough

Staged tmux launch scripts now try /bin/rm -f and then command rm -f to remove the staging script. The script continues if both cleanup commands fail. Tests check cleanup fallback behavior and payload execution across launch modes.

Changes: Staged script cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Staged script cleanup and validation
packages/daemon/src/adapters/tmux.ts, packages/daemon/test/tmux-shell-command.test.ts
The staged script tries /bin/rm -f first, then command rm -f, and continues if both attempts fail. Tests cover missing or failing PATH rm, cleanup through PATH when /bin/rm is unavailable, and payload execution across launch modes. They also check that cleanup does not call a sourced shell function named rm or delete an unrelated file.

The cleanup fallback preserves payload execution when cleanup fails. No concrete merge-blocking regression is established; the reported startup-probe failure remains unexplained.

Thanks, @haralez. This makes a consumed launch script remove itself with rm from the receiving shell's PATH, falling back to /bin/rm. The cleanup line ends with || true, so a failed cleanup doesn't stop the launch, even under set -e. We've received it and will review it.

Thanks again, @haralez. In our checks, where there's no /bin/rm (as on NixOS-like systems), the consumed script now removes itself through PATH rm, and because the cleanup line ends in || true, a sourced shell under set -e still reaches the launch, where on main the failed /bin/rm stops the shell before it. The launch ran exactly once and kept its own exit status. From reading the code, exec mode is unchanged, and the quoted path and -f -- are kept.

One change, please: in the script's first line (packages/daemon/src/adapters/tmux.ts:762), try /bin/rm first and fall back to command rm, so the line becomes:

/bin/rm -f -- '<path>' 2>/dev/null || command rm -f -- '<path>' || true

The 2>/dev/null only hides /bin/rm's error on systems that don't have it.

There are two reasons, both on systems that have /bin/rm, where main removes the script:

  1. fish: in our checks with fish 3.6.0 in sourced mode, with no rm on the receiving shell's PATH but a usable /bin/rm, command rm failing to find rm didn't fall through to /bin/rm, so the script was left behind; main removes it. A PATH rm that exits non-zero does fall back.
  2. A program named rm on PATH: command skips aliases and functions, but it still runs the first rm on PATH, which may not be /bin/rm (for example, a wrapper that moves files to a trash folder). That program would handle the consumed script, so it could be moved rather than deleted, where main's /bin/rm deletes it.

From reading the new line, trying /bin/rm first keeps main's result wherever /bin/rm exists, and on systems without it keeps your fix in sh, bash, zsh, dash and ksh. We haven't checked fish there yet. Please keep everything else as it is (the || true, and the set -e, exec and exit-status behaviour), and update the first sentence of the PR description to match the new order. After your push, we'll check that change, including fish.

Agreed. I have prepared the requested absolute-first line, including 2>/dev/null, while retaining the PATH fallback, || true, and the launch command on its own line. The 40 shell-launch checks pass with and without /bin/rm available; the three absolute-first ordering checks fail on the current published head. Independent review and exact-candidate build, lint, and full-suite checks are running before the push. I will update the description to match the order and keep native fish validation separate from the checks I can run here.

Updated in 8f34d94e: the cleanup line is now /bin/rm -f -- <quoted-path> 2>/dev/null || command rm -f -- <quoted-path> || true. The launch command remains on its own line; payload, exec behavior, quoting, and -f -- are unchanged. The description now reflects the absolute-first order.

All 40 shell-launch tests passed with and without absolute cleanup available. Independent review passed 58 checks, including absolute success bypassing PATH, missing/nonzero absolute cleanup falling back to PATH with only its stderr suppressed, and both cleanup routes failing without changing payload execution or exit status. Six ordering controls fail on the previous PATH-first tip.

Build and lint passed. The full local run had 21,896 passed, one failed, 11 skipped, and five todo: the exact-session probe's private tmux server exited during startup. That test passed separately in isolation on this same candidate; I do not claim the full run passed or a proven cause for the startup failure. Latest-head CI is pending. Actual fish execution remains unchecked locally; the existing fish-selection controls pass. Thank you for offering the follow-up fish check.

Approved at 8f34d94. The consumed launch script's cleanup line is now /bin/rm -f -- '<path>' 2>/dev/null || command rm -f -- '<path>' || true, then the unchanged launch line. Where /bin/rm exists, the result is main's: it removes the script, and no PATH rm runs. Where it doesn't, POSIX shells remove the script through PATH rm (bypassing aliases and functions), and a sourced shell under set -e still reaches the launch, which runs once with its own exit status. Sourced fish without /bin/rm keeps main's result: the script stays, fish prints its unknown-command line, and the launch runs once. The quoted path, -f -- and exec mode are unchanged. Required CI passed at this head on current main.

Thanks, @haralez, for the change after our review; #1310 is merged. A consumed launch script is still removed with /bin/rm where it exists. Where it doesn't, POSIX shells now remove it through rm on the PATH, and a sourced shell under set -e still reaches the launch command. A sourced fish shell without /bin/rm keeps today's behaviour, so the script stays there. It isn't in a published release yet.
