What changed

Related: #3225 (the umbrella issue remains open).

This introduces an opt-in Daily regression planner with a 360-minute cumulative test-execution budget, daily core coverage, and seven disjoint extension slots. Parallel execution and repeated platforms/sanitizers are charged separately; build and queue time are outside this test budget. Excess budget warns, while assertion failures, timeouts, skipped selected cases and missing results fail.

  • Freeze source/date/week/seed and policy/matrix/history hashes. Failed-job reruns reuse successful lane artifacts and replace only rerun lane evidence.
  • Enumerate HGraph metric/dimension groups and finite Pyramid/SINDI generator choices; retain original assertions, SECTION branches, workload limits and default non-Daily behavior.
  • Rotate one SIMD configuration with integration sentinels; retain complete coverage-support tests and the existing coverage threshold.
  • Add per-configuration records, strict expected/executed reconciliation and a final budget summary.
  • Replace the examples' incompatible sh/[[ loop with the existing manifest-based runner; align Daily TSan setup with the maintained suppression/BLAS settings.
  • Keep regression scheduling disabled. The existing performance schedules, PR/Branch scope and production runner configuration are unchanged.

Validation

Validated the proposed source based on main 922cce7e:

  • 387 Python/helper tests passed, including 31 Daily planner/workflow regressions.
  • Modified Daily and manual workflows pass actionlint 1.7.12; docs/path checks and clang-format 20 dry-run passed.
  • GCC 13 Release, Clang 20 ASan/UBSan and Clang 20 TSan test builds passed.
  • C++ adapter regressions: 3 cases / 11 assertions passed under GCC and ASan.
  • Fresh ASan plans: 5 real configurations passed across HGraph, Pyramid and SINDI, including an extended HGraph configuration.
  • Default TSan concurrent suite: 28 cases / 2,264,419 assertions passed.
  • Default make test_parallel with GCC 13/system OpenBLAS passed: unit, HGraph and other functional groups all succeeded. Compilation used 32 jobs in an isolated development checkout; no host swap/cleanup steps were reproduced.

The first release-mode manual weekday trial selected 557 configurations from 482 core + 501 weekly extensions. It exposed:

  1. HGraph Duplicate recall assertion: 82.699996948 > 84.150001526 failed.
  2. HGraph Search with Dirty Vector: result count 5 == 10 failed.
  3. HGraph Mark Remove exceeded the trial's 600-second calibration timeout (the proposed normal per-configuration limit is 1800 seconds).

The initial trial also exposed an evidence-reader bug: Catch2 stores captured streams inside XML. That reader was corrected and regression-tested; original trial evidence is retained and is not relabeled as a successful full run. A stale cross-build inventory used during an initial ASan probe was rejected; fresh plans from the matching binary passed the five configurations above.

Review follow-up (5079deb)

  • Fixed the reusable performance caller's read-only Actions permission, absolute Linux sanitizer suppression paths, capability-aware unit inventory, and rejection of any skipped testcase within a selected group.
  • Plans and summaries now expose exact capability exclusions and reasons. Missing CMake capability metadata does not authorize exclusions.
  • Real CPU inventory: 1,404 core units, one explicit CUDA-disabled exclusion. Real ASan inventory: 1,403 core units, two explicit CUDA/allocator exclusions. Two selected allocator/Kmeans ASan tests and one isolated TSan concurrent test passed.
  • Added regressions for the permission contract, six suppression exports across cwd changes, capability selection/reporting, mixed pass/skip groups, and raw-string delimiter-like text. All 387 helper tests passed.
  • Previous full PR CI 41618444169 passed, including PR CI Gate. This update triggers a new normal PR CI; prior results are not a pass for the new head.
  • No algorithm/assertion changes, no new test disabling, no production configuration or trusted digest updates. Full Daily acceptance remains incomplete as listed below.

Draft / remaining acceptance

The maintainer explicitly authorized this Draft PR with the exceptions listed here. Do not merge or enable regression scheduling yet.

  • macOS ASan and complete ARM/Python/coverage/compatibility lanes have not been validated for this change.
  • The HGraph failures/long tail require investigation; no production algorithm, recall assertion or failing testcase was disabled.
  • Timing history starts explicitly unmeasured. No claim of meeting the six-hour budget or completing seven-day acceptance.
  • This conservative first implementation retains repeated TestGeneral contracts and complete quantizer/tune groups. Further contract deduplication, richer phase accounting, environment calibration and measured budget acceptance remain open in [improve](ci): separate PR, main and daily validation layers #3225.

Lint summary follow-up (1cfdefd)

The final Daily summary now waits for full lint and includes its result. Regression tests exercise successful, failed, cancelled and skipped lint results and verify that lint adds no test-budget time. All 33 Daily helper/workflow tests and actionlint passed. Regression scheduling remains disabled; this change does not claim full Daily acceptance.

Disk IO coverage follow-up (093f6ba)

  • Preserve each metric/dimension group's original graph IO cursor, including RaBitQ exclusions, and restore it during split execution. PR/default unsplit execution keeps the original sequence.
  • Add a regression comparing split and unsplit IO tuples against the original nested loop, checking cross-metric cursor continuity, SQ8+mmap coverage, and rejection of stale/malformed offsets.
  • Clang 20 ASan adapter regressions: 4 cases / 19 assertions passed. Actual enumerated start offsets were 0,1,2,2,0,1; a real SQ8+mmap Daily configuration passed 48,065 assertions.
  • Clang 20 TSan: 28 concurrent cases / 2,245,362 assertions passed. GCC 13 default make test_parallel: unit/HGraph/other groups all passed, including the new regression.
  • All 33 Daily Python/workflow tests, clang-format 20 dry-run, docs and diff checks passed.
  • The real ASan configuration also emitted the existing UBSan null-pointer-offset diagnostic at tests/test_index/test_index_update.cpp:53. It is reproducible in the earlier pre-fix ASan validation logs as well. Assertion success is not a sanitizer-clean claim; this unrelated fixture issue remains open, alongside the previously listed acceptance gaps.
  • No workflow/schedule, production algorithm, assertion threshold, runner or trusted-digest changes in this follow-up. No merge.

C API CI stability follow-up (6aca2e7)

  • Run 41643770613 attempt 1 failed only in the existing vsag_c_api basic test: the initial self-search did not include its own ID. The container hook error wrapped this test failure; the subsequent leak report came from assertion unwinding before manual index destruction.
  • Reproduced the same assertion on repetition 41 in an isolated GCC 13 ASan build of the exact tested merge aea0cf04. This C API fixture and the production algorithm were not changed by the Daily implementation.
  • Explicitly use one build thread in the C API contract fixture, avoiding its implicit 100-thread HGraph construction default; initialize the result structure and capture the failing query/results. All original self-match assertions, serialization roundtrips, data sizes and separate concurrency coverage remain enabled. This stabilizes the fixture; it does not claim to repair the underlying parallel graph-construction behavior.
  • On the exact CI merge plus this patch, GCC 13 ASan passed 19 C API cases / 8,322 assertions, followed by 200/200 independent basic-case repetitions. Clang 20 ASan passed the same 19 cases plus 30 repetitions.
  • GCC 13 make test_parallel passed all unit/HGraph/other groups. Clang 20 TSan passed 28 concurrent cases / 2,252,316 assertions. All 33 Daily helper/workflow tests, clang-format 20, docs and diff checks passed.
  • Squashed into the existing commit. New normal PR CI is pending; prior green results are not a pass for this head. Existing macOS/full-Daily acceptance limitations remain unchanged. Regression scheduling stays disabled; no production runner, trusted digest, cache or algorithm changes.

Risk and rollback

Only explicit Daily context enables parameter selection. No Daily context preserves the original generator product. Revert this change to restore the previous manual Daily execution; keep regression scheduling disabled until a fixed-source manual acceptance succeeds.

Public guidance: docs/agents/daily-regression.md. Detailed operational evidence is retained privately.

🟡 Changes recommended

Critical defects in suppression paths, capability-aware test selection, skip detection, and workflow permissions break Linux test planning, reject expected exclusions, allow selected tests to be skipped unnoticed, and invalidate manual performance invocations.

🔵 Needs a closer look

The cross-platform execution and evidence-collection changes still lack complete fixed-source validation on intended runners, requiring maintainer review of macOS/ARM, Python, coverage and compatibility runtime evidence before merging or enabling regression scheduling.

[warning] Hard-coded exit code 4 for the HGraph enumeration helper is brittle.

The enumeration command uses Catch2's SKIP("Daily configuration enumeration only") and then asserts that the process exits with 4. This value is Catch2's "all tests skipped" return code only in certain versions/conditions. If Catch2 behavior changes, if a future version assigns a different return code, or if the binary starts returning another non-zero code, the Daily planner will abort with a generic "HGraph inventory failed" error that gives no hint about the actual exit code. Please replace the magic number with a named constant (e.g. CATCH2_ALL_SKIPPED_EXIT_CODE) and include the received state["exit_code"] in the error message.

[suggestion] Validate the required Daily environment variables before use.

After confirming VSAG_DAILY_CONTEXT is present, the code immediately reads VSAG_DAILY_LANE and VSAG_DAILY_ENVIRONMENT. If a caller sets only the context but forgets the lane/environment variables, this raises an uncaught KeyError with a stack trace rather than a clear PlanError. Add an explicit check that all three variables are set and raise PlanError("Missing required Daily environment variables ...") if any are absent.

Freeze a reproducible Daily context and enumerate explicit HGraph,
Pyramid and SINDI configurations into daily core and seven rotation slots.
Report cumulative test budgets with strict result reconciliation, preserve
coverage and default test paths, and keep regression scheduling disabled.

Maintainer review is needed because fixed-source Daily runtime acceptance remains unvalidated across ARM/macOS, Python, coverage, and compatibility lanes, with documented HGraph failures and long-tail timeouts requiring assessment.
