fix(ingestion): ingest Fedora and Alpine from supported images - #303
amanthanvi wants to merge 5 commits into
Conversation
Move Linux container tags into ingestion/distro-images.env and load that file from the runner and the monthly workflow. Fedora 44 and Alpine 3.24 replace the end-of-life tags. On Fedora, upgrade image builds the mirror no longer publishes before reinstalling them so man pages are restored. Co-authored-by: Aman Thanvi <amanthanvi@users.noreply.github.com>

Reviewer's GuideThe PR centralizes Linux ingestion image tags in a validated shared env file consumed by both the local runner and dataset workflow, upgrades Fedora and Alpine to supported releases, and hardens Fedora package reinstall logic by upgrading stale image packages before restoring their man pages. Hey - I've reviewed your changes and they look great!
Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. The shared image configuration and Fedora package upgrade/reinstall behavior change the contents produced by the ingestion workflow and can write incorrect man-page data into the dataset. Reverting stops future runs, and the affected release can be recomputed by rerunning ingestion, so the impact is bounded and repairable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fix the shell escaping in both Confirm commands.
Each command wraps the sh -lc script in single quotes. Inside single quotes, \" stays as a backslash and a quote. The inner shell then passes literal " characters to the tool.
- Line 120:
sedreceives"1,80p"and fails with an unknown-command error. - Line 140:
grepsearches for the pattern"^NoExtract", including the quote characters, so it never matches.
Remove the backslashes. Use double quotes inside the single-quoted script.

The confirm commands passed backslash-escaped quotes into a single-quoted sh -lc script, so sed and grep received the quote characters. Use real double quotes inside that script. Co-authored-by: Aman Thanvi <amanthanvi@users.noreply.github.com>

Read ingestion/distro-images.env only when no BETTERMAN_*_IMAGE_REF override is present, and make the version-floor test fail with a clear message on non-numeric image tags. Co-authored-by: Aman Thanvi <amanthanvi@users.noreply.github.com>
Write the image assignments to a temp file, require every line to match BETTERMAN_<DISTRO>_IMAGE_REF=<ref>, and only then append them to GITHUB_ENV so stray stdout cannot corrupt the environment file. Co-authored-by: Aman Thanvi <amanthanvi@users.noreply.github.com>
…rides Validate the distro against the known container distro list before reading a BETTERMAN_*_IMAGE_REF override, so an override for an unknown distro raises 'unsupported distro' instead of being accepted. The shared image file remains the source of truth and is checked to match the known list. Co-authored-by: Aman Thanvi <amanthanvi@users.noreply.github.com>
Summary
ingestion/distro-images.env, loaded byingestion/ingestion/docker_runner.py, and exported to the update-dataset workflow from the same file. Fedora is 44 and Alpine is 3.24._image_reffirst validates the distro against the known container distro list, so an override for an unknown distro (for exampleBETTERMAN_FREEBSD_IMAGE_REF) still raisesunsupported distro. Only then does it honor aBETTERMAN_<DISTRO>_IMAGE_REFoverride, which skips readingdistro-images.env. A test asserts the file is not read in either path, and another checks the known list matches the file.BETTERMAN_<DISTRO>_IMAGE_REF=<ref>, and only then appends to$GITHUB_ENV. Stray stdout or empty output fails the step.Testing
