Summary

Changes from a UX review of the whole window. Only text, icons, button order, window size and keyboard use changed. A run, how it is stopped, what is put back afterwards and every safety check are unchanged.

  • Risk said up front. The choose screen and the run screen both say the screen can go black for a moment and that the PC must not be switched off. Until now only the result page said so, after the run.
  • Abort.
    • The button shows an X and "Abort run", with a red outline. The old icon looked like an unchecked checkbox.
    • Once clicked, it is replaced by "Stopping and putting the card back...".
    • The title row shows how far the whole run is ("12 of about 40 min").
  • First run.
    • With no saved tune, the Dashboard's blue button is Optimize GPU....
    • Without administrator rights, the Optimize page keeps its Optimize button. The elevated copy opens on that page with the profile still selected (--open-optimize=N).
  • Stopping by choice is not a failure. Abort and "Don't start" lead to a calm Stopped page.
    • Other failures start with a capital and say where run.log is.
    • The window never tells a user to run gao --reset. boot.log and the command line keep the engine's wording; the Dashboard log rewords it.
  • Result pages.
    • The heading gives the result: "Done: 4.6 % faster, 6 % more power".
    • The score row is called "Speed (stress test)", and the power change is shown in percent for every profile.
    • Done comes first. Revert to stock is set apart on the right.
  • Window.
    • Minimum size 1000×700 (scaled), and the window always opens inside the monitor's work area. Before, at 150 % on a 1080p screen it was taller than the screen.
    • Text wraps, and card titles and tile labels shrink rather than being cut.
    • The scrollbar's space is always kept, so the Abort button no longer moves when the page grows.
    • Tab, the arrow keys, Enter and Space now work (ImGui keyboard navigation).
  • Tray.
    • Exit during a run asks first.
    • Revert and Re-apply from the tray report what they did in a balloon while the window is hidden.
    • Failures use the warning icon.
    • After a driver update the balloon offers the 5-minute test, the same as at logon.
  • Wording.
    • Dashboard log in plain words, three lines by default.
    • Detect GPU is now an icon button.
    • A next step under "Set by another program".
    • New Fan page text, "Back to the tested curve", and a button on both empty Fan pages.
    • About page updated.
    • "Not administrator", "Details", "Don't start", and °C everywhere.
    • The README gives about 40 minutes for All in one.

Not changed, by choice: progress per step ("step 2 of 5"), screen-reader support, and editing the fan curve with the keyboard.

Before and after

All pictures are PrintWindow captures of the --demo window, run without administrator rights. Most are 1180×1000; the small-window ones are at the new minimum, 1000×700 (the old pictures were taken at 960×700).

Before After
Run screen: risk text, Abort, overall progress
Question about other programs
Choose screen without administrator rights
Result page
Not starting next to other programs
Dashboard without administrator rights
Keyboard (after a few presses of Tab)
Small window: run screen
Small window: choose screen
Small window: Dashboard

The pictures are kept on the branch pr-assets/ux-review, so they never reach main. That branch can be deleted once this is merged.

Test plan

  • cmake --workflow --preset ci: builds with /W4 /WX, core_tests and app_tests pass.
  • --demo and --demo=run (without administrator rights): went through the question about other programs, every run step, the result, Abort, "Don't start", the Dashboard, the Fan page and the About page, at 1180×1000 and at the 1000×700 minimum; Tab, Enter and Space were tried too.
  • Not visible in the demo, checked in the code only:
    • the tray menu, including the Exit question and the balloons;
    • the elevated restart with --open-optimize=N;
    • the "Stopping..." text after Abort (the demo stops at once);
    • result pages from a real run that failed;
    • the Fan page with administrator rights.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

From a UX review of the whole window. Text, icons, order, window size and
keyboard only: what a run does, how it is stopped and what is put back are
unchanged.

- Before and during a run the window says the screen can go black for a
  moment and that the PC must not be switched off; the result page no
  longer is the first place that says so.
- Abort is an X with "Abort run", outlined red, and says "Stopping and
  putting the card back..." once clicked. The title row shows how far the
  run is ("12 of about 40 min"); a short step counts down as "5 s left".
- Without a saved tune the Dashboard's blue button is "Optimize GPU...";
  without administrator rights the Optimize page keeps its Optimize button,
  and the elevated copy opens on that page with the profile still selected
  (--open-optimize=N).
- A run the user stopped or did not start reads "Stopped", not a red
  failure. Other failures get a capitalised reason and where run.log is.
  The GUI never tells a user to run `gao --reset`; boot.log and the command
  line keep the engine's words, the Dashboard log says them plainly.
- Result pages: "Done: 4.6 % faster, 6 % more power", "Speed (stress
  test)", the power change in percent for every profile, and [Done] first
  with Revert to stock apart at the right.
- Dashboard: three log lines by default, an icon button for Detect GPU, a
  next step under "Set by another program", "power limit" spelled out.
- Fan page: a short explanation, "Back to the tested curve", and a button
  in both empty states. About text brought up to date.
- Tray: Exit during a run asks first; Revert and Re-apply from the tray say
  what they did in a balloon while the window is hidden; failures use the
  warning icon; a driver update offers the 5-minute test, as at logon.
- Window: a minimum size of 1000x700 (scaled), opened inside the monitor's
  work area, wrapped text and card titles that shrink instead of being
  cut, the scrollbar's room always kept, and Tab/arrows/Enter/Space work
  (ImGui keyboard navigation).
- Consistent terms and units: "Don't start" on the question about other
  programs, "Not administrator", "Details", degrees as "°C", All in one
  "about 40 minutes" in the README too.
