# 🍓 Raspberry Pi Remote Management Project

This project documents a complete setup for managing a Raspberry Pi both locally (within the same network) and remotely (from anywhere in the world) using secure and modern tools.

It is divided into two main phases:

1. **Local setup and control (LAN)**
2. **Remote access via VPN (Tailscale + XRDP)**

---

## 🎯 Project Goals

- Configure a Raspberry Pi as a controllable system
- Enable local access from a PC in the same network
- Enable secure remote access from external networks
- Avoid exposing ports to the internet
- Maintain simplicity and security

---

## 🧱 Project Structure

### 🟢 Phase 1 — Local Setup & LAN Remote Control

> **Title:** *Raspberry Pi Setup & Local Network Control*

This phase focuses on configuring the Raspberry Pi and enabling access from another device within the same local network.

#### 🔧 What is covered

- Raspberry Pi OS installation and configuration
- Network setup (Wi-Fi / Ethernet)
- SSH access from local PC
- XRDP setup for desktop access within LAN
- Basic system preparation and cleanup

#### 🌐 Access method

- SSH → `192.168.x.x`
- RDP → `192.168.x.x`

#### 🎯 Goal

To fully control the Raspberry Pi from a local machine (same network).

---

### 🔵 Phase 2 — Secure Remote Access (Tailscale + XRDP)

> **Title:** *Secure Remote Desktop via Tailscale VPN*

This phase extends the project by enabling remote access from outside the local network using Tailscale.

#### 🔧 What is covered

- Tailscale installation and configuration
- Secure device authentication
- VPN-based networking (WireGuard)
- Remote desktop access via XRDP
- Mobile and external PC access

#### 🌐 Access method

- RDP → `100.x.x.x` (Tailscale IP)

#### 🎯 Goal

To securely access the Raspberry Pi from anywhere without:
- port forwarding
- public IP requirements
- firewall exposure

🔐 Security Model

This project is designed with security in mind:

  • No open ports on the router
  • End-to-end encrypted VPN (WireGuard via Tailscale)
  • Access restricted to authenticated devices only
  • No direct exposure of XRDP to the internet

🚀 Use Cases

  • Remote system administration
  • Access to home server from mobile network
  • Development environment access
  • Personal cloud / services hosting
  • Secure remote desktop usage

⚖️ LAN vs Remote Access

Feature Local (LAN) Remote (Tailscale)
Network 192.168.x.x 100.x.x.x
Security Basic (LAN) High (VPN)
Port forwarding Not required Not required
External access ❌ No ✅ Yes
Setup complexity Low Medium

📦 Technologies Used

  • Raspberry Pi OS
  • XRDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
  • Tailscale (WireGuard-based VPN)
  • SSH (Secure Shell)

🔧 Project Evolution

This project follows a progressive approach:

  1. Start with local control (simple and reliable)

  2. Extend to remote secure access (scalable and safe)

  3. Optionally expand to:

    • full LAN access via subnet routing
    • multi-device management
    • secure service hosting

🔥 Possible Improvements

  • Subnet routing (access entire home network)
  • SSH key-based authentication
  • Tailscale ACL configuration
  • Custom DNS (MagicDNS)
  • Reverse proxy + HTTPS (for web services)

📜 License

MIT (optional)

🙌 Credits

This project was tested and developed using:

  • Raspberry Pi OS
  • XRDP
  • Tailscale VPN
