Overview

The code is final for the first release tag, v0.1.0, so the pages get one structure before it ships. This copies living-doc-collector-gh's rebuild (#137): its tree, its page rules and the tests that keep the pages in them.

  • New page: docs/action.md, the action's full reference. README.md keeps the overview, one usage step, every input and the output at a glance, and a "where next" table.
  • Rebuilt: README.md, DEVELOPER.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, SPEC.md, apps/cli/README.md, packages/core/README.md and the three command pages. Each opens with ## Purpose (what the page is for, then who reads it) and ## Contents, and holds each fact once.
  • Code maps: pages carry no path::symbol. The CONTEXT.md beside the code holds each depth-2 page's ## Code map, which names where the code realises each fact.
  • Deleted: the pre-agentic files: .claude/README.md, .claude/commands/, .claude/agents/test-author.md, .github/agents/, .github/copilot-instructions.md.
  • Page rules: DEVELOPER.md § Writing documentation, provisional, the only copy here.
  • Checks: tests/docs/, ported from the collector, runs in make qa through make test-root. It checks the page list and depths, Purpose then Contents, the Contents links, orphan pages, anchors (in the code maps; none on a page), the examples, one release named, and the option lists against action.yml, main.py::COMMAND_INPUTS and the click group. It also checks every code against ALL_CODES.
  • CI: test.yml gains the collector's docs_changed filter, and the tests job runs on either filter. A PR that changes only a page, action.yml, local-integration.sh or .env.local.example now runs the tests (tests/docs/test_ci_filter.py); before, a script-only PR skipped them.
  • Fixed: the downstream action is living-doc-generator-markdown; the README cites no planning file; the AI-free note links living-doc agentic/; every uses: names @v0.1.0; the branch-naming heading lost its planning id and moved to CONTRIBUTING.md.

The pages link the canon and restate none of it:

  • artifact-rules.md: the envelope and metadata.run → core § Shared envelope, § The CI run context
  • errors.md: the validation order, the codes, forwarded warnings → core § Shared input validation, § Shared envelope; coverage-matrix § Warnings
  • pipeline-rules.md: one documentation source → core § Shared input validation
  • rendering.md: records and views, coverage, the summaries → core § The view filter; normalize-docs § Content; coverage-matrix § Entities and rows, § Summaries; the CLI's gate rounding
  • component-checks.md: R11, R12 → DEVELOPER.md § Gates; each command's § Lineage
  • authoring.md and ac-grammar.md: keyword variants → coverage-matrix § Entities and rows
  • living-doc principles.md § The frame → README § Overview; glossary: one term per idea → § Writing documentation

QA:

  • make qa: every package 10.00/10 and its tests pass; the root passes, tests/docs/ included; no-vendored-schemas passes.
  • lychee --include-fragments './**/*.md': 0 errors.
  • The four QA greps: no planning id, no agentic-toolkit, generator-pdf or repo-conventions on a page; every uses: names @v0.1.0.
  • tests/test_local_integration.py::test_no_workflow_runs_the_script passes.

Structure

Tree

Page Depth Purpose
README.md 1 A GitHub Action that runs one toolkit command per step, turning a collector's JSON into the file a generator reads. It is the normalize step between living-doc-collector-gh and living-doc-generator-markdown: it carries every transformation and renders nothing.
DEVELOPER.md 1, solo Contributors set up the repository, run the gates, the CLI and a local run, follow CI, and write pages.
CONTRIBUTING.md 1, solo Anyone reporting a bug, requesting a feature or opening a pull request: the conventions and the AI-free principle.
SPEC.md 1, solo Whoever proposes a new command, package or contract change: how it is specced before it is built; the pending list (empty).
docs/action.md 2, leaf Workflow authors: what the runner needs, the commands, every input and which command takes it, the output, the run-level errors.
apps/cli/README.md 2, leaf Whoever runs living-doc by hand: the command group, each command's options, its log and error lines, the exit codes.
packages/core/README.md 2, leaf Developers changing a command: the reader table, shared input validation, view filter, CI run context and envelope every command shares.
packages/services/normalize_docs/README.md 2, leaf What normalize-docs writes into generator-ready.json: content, view, document block, envelope, warnings, lineage.
packages/services/normalize_tests/README.md 2, leaf What normalize-tests writes into ui-test-catalog.json: grouping and order, envelope, warnings, lineage.
packages/services/coverage_matrix/README.md 2, leaf What coverage-matrix writes into coverage-matrix.json: entities and rows, summaries, view, envelope, warnings, lineage.

Not pages: AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .local_context/, .claude/, .github/, every CONTEXT.md, tests/fixtures/ (2 READMEs), packages/services/*/tests/expected/ (3 READMEs).

Moved references

  • tests/ and scripts: none changes. local-integration.sh names § Local Integration Run and tests/test_local_integration.py § Action venv; both titles stay. New: tests/docs/, the collector's seven files.
  • CI: test.yml detect gains docs_changed (the collector's pattern, \.sh$ and \.example$ included); tests runs on either filter. link-check.yml, integration.yml unchanged.
  • .github/copilot-review-rules.md: gains § Documentation, naming the ten pages; its SPEC.md § Cross-cutting contract changes reference still resolves.
  • .claude/rules/docs-lifecycle.md: the homes follow the tree (docs/action.md for the action's commands, inputs, output and errors; a package's README; DEVELOPER.md), new text follows § Writing documentation, and each new fact goes into its page's code map.
  • The files from before the agentic setup, deleted: .claude/README.md, .claude/commands/implement-task.md, .claude/commands/verify-pr-ready.md, .github/agents/ (5 files), .github/copilot-instructions.md (its README.md#inputs link goes with it), and .claude/agents/test-author.md, as living-doc-collector-gh #144 did. The coding conventions only copilot-instructions.md held move to the root CONTEXT.md § Conventions.
  • Root CONTEXT.md: § Structure gains docs/action.md and tests/docs/; the .github/copilot-instructions.md line goes; one line names DEVELOPER.md § Writing documentation. Its other page references hold.
  • packages/services/CONTEXT.md: one line names the core's § Shared envelope; its other references hold.
  • New code maps: packages/core/CONTEXT.md, apps/cli/CONTEXT.md and one CONTEXT.md per command; the root CONTEXT.md maps docs/action.md (see "Taken during the work" below).
  • .gitignore: a comment named DEVELOPER.md § Run CLI Locally, now § CLI run.
  • AGENTS.md § This project → Commands: make test-root names the page checks in tests/docs/.
  • SPEC.md § 0 and § 5: as above.
  • Inbound links: none moves. DEVELOPER.md#local-integration-run (2 links), packages/services/coverage_matrix/README.md (2), README.md (1) keep their targets.

The four structure choices, taken before the issue

  • Each package's README.md stays beside its code, a depth-2 page linked from README.md. The port gives depth 2 to a README.md beside a pyproject.toml.
  • The READMEs beside test data (packages/services/*/tests/expected/, tests/fixtures/) are not pages; DEVELOPER.md § Test data links each.
  • The files from before the agentic setup are deleted, as in living-doc-collector-gh #144.
  • DEVELOPER.md's per-tool blocks and deprecated target names become one gates table; the deprecated names, still in the Makefile, are its "Old name" column.

Taken during the work

  • .claude/agents/test-author.md is deleted with the rest, as the collector did.
  • DEVELOPER.md's branch-naming summary moves into CONTRIBUTING.md § Branch Naming, one home.
  • Pages carry no path::symbol: a depth-2 page's facts map to code in the ## Code map of the CONTEXT.md beside it (tests/docs/pages.py::CODE_MAPS). Only DEVELOPER.md keeps anchors. This replaces the collector's rule that every depth-2 list item ends in an anchor.

Inbound links

None moves. DEVELOPER.md#local-integration-run, packages/services/coverage_matrix/README.md and README.md keep their targets.

Release Notes

  • Every page opens with its purpose and contents, and make qa checks the page structure, the code maps, the examples and the option lists.
  • The action's full reference is in docs/action.md; README.md lists every input and the output at a glance.
  • The examples name the v0.1.0 release.
  • A pull request that changes only a page, action.yml or the local integration script now runs the tests.

Framework

Stays inside the frame: pages, tests and the CI filter; no transformation changes (F3).

Follow-ups

Known debt from this rebuild, to plan once this PR is done. Nothing here changes what this PR ships, except where an item says "before merge".

Before merge or with the first release

  • Issue Rebuild the repository's pages to one page structure #101's criterion: "Every list item on a depth-2 page says where it is realised" no longer matches the rule, because anchors moved to the code maps. Reword it in the issue before this PR closes it.
  • Page limits: long sentences on the pages are shortened. SPEC.md's process text, kept as approved, and the CLI's quoted error lines carry an <!-- over limit: … --> reason. No test checks the limits; the review rule does.
  • Tag v0.1.0: the repository has no tag yet, and every uses: example names this one. Cut it with or right after the merge.

After this PR

  • living-doc-collector-gh, parser fixes: its tests/docs/pages.py at 93faed7 has the bugs fixed here. Confirmed by running each case: a closing fence indented too far, a fence inside an HTML comment, a four-space fence outside a list, list content left of the opener, no space after >, and titled and reference-style links. The nested tests/ exclusion and the ## Warnings check don't apply there today.
  • living-doc-collector-gh, page rule: its pages keep anchors; here they moved to code maps. Decide whether the collector follows.
  • Page rule wording: DEVELOPER.md § Writing documentation says Purpose is "who reads the page and what they get", while these pages lead with what the page is for. Align the wording.
  • Code map coverage: no test checks that a page's fact has a code-map item; only the review rule's ten-item sample does.
  • Planning references outside the pages: Makefile (its header, comments and every deprecation notice), .github/dependabot.yml and .gitignore still cite planning files or phase names.
  • Deprecated make names: the old target names stay "for one release". Remove them after v0.1.0.
  • Release documentation: release_draft.yml exists, but DEVELOPER.md has no versioning or release chapter, unlike the collector's.
  • Canon links: 24 links to living-doc-utilities follow master, while the pin is 0.8.0. A later canon change can make a page point at rules this version doesn't implement.
  • Hand-written Markdown parser: review findings on tests/docs/pages.py are fixed only when they affect a real page or let a violation through, so other edge cases stay open. Replacing it with a library would add a dependency; decide whether that is worth it.

Walkthrough

The PR reorganizes repository documentation into linked root, action, CLI, developer, and package pages. It adds code maps and documentation consistency tests, updates CI to run tests for documentation-related changes, and removes several legacy agent instruction files.

Changes

Documentation rebuild

Layer / File(s) Summary
Page structure and repository guidance
README.md, DEVELOPER.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, SPEC.md, CONTEXT.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/*, .github/agents/*, .github/copilot-*
The root guides and page ownership rules are reorganized. DEVELOPER.md adds documentation-writing rules. Legacy agent instructions are deleted, and Copilot review rules add documentation checks.
Action and CLI references
docs/action.md, apps/cli/README.md, apps/cli/CONTEXT.md, CONTEXT.md
The action and CLI references describe commands, inputs, outputs, errors, and exit behavior. Context maps connect documented facts to implementation locations.
Package references and code maps
packages/core/*, packages/services/CONTEXT.md, packages/services/*/README.md, packages/services/*/CONTEXT.md
Package READMEs describe documented behavior, data, warnings, lineage, and validation. New context maps link those statements to implementation and tests.
Documentation checks and CI integration
tests/docs/*, .github/workflows/test.yml
New tests validate page structure, links, anchors, examples, option lists, and code names. The workflow sets docs_changed for documentation-related file changes and runs tests when either python_changed or docs_changed is true.

Explanation

[#101] Coding requirements are covered at head e1fd431. (1) Page tree and structure: the PR body has ## Structure with the approved tree, Purpose and Contents chapters per page, and the old-to-new move table. The PR body also has ## Framework. (2) Documentation checks in make qa: Makefile test-root runs pytest tests/, and make qa runs qa-root, so tests/docs/ runs in make qa. The check modules named in the PR (test_page_structure.py, test_anchors.py, test_examples.py, test_option_lists.py, test_ci_filter.py) cover page list and depths, Purpose/Contents, Contents links, orphans, anchors, examples, release tag, option tables against action.yml, COMMAND_INPUTS and the CLI, and registered codes. Each module includes planted-violation tests. The planted-violation and make qa results are author-reported; I did not rerun them. (3) CI filter: .github/workflows/test.yml at head sets docs_changed from Markdown files, action.yml, .sh, .example, and workflow or Dependabot YAML. The tests job runs when python_changed or docs_changed is true. This meets the test.yml requirement. (4) Stale references, deleted pre-agentic files, code maps, and preserved inbound links (DEVELOPER.md#local-integration-run, coverage_matrix README, README) are described in the PR and its move table. (5) The PR notes that the depth-2 list item rule ("says where it is realised") is replaced by code-map anchors. That criterion is not in the supplied #101 text. The anchor requirement is covered by the anchor checks, so no unmet requirement is recorded here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed paths in the whole-PR summary are documentation, documentation tests, CI filter, review/agent or context files, or a documentation reference. These are pages (README.md, DEVELOPER.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, SPEC.md, docs/action.md, apps/cli and packages README files), CONTEXT.md files, tests/docs/, .github/copilot-review-rules.md, .claude/rules/docs-lifecycle.md, deleted agent and pre-agentic files, and .github/workflows/test.yml. .gitignore changes one comment to match the renamed DEVELOPER section. AGENTS.md changes one make test description to name the page checks in make test-root. Both changes connect to this rebuild. No action.yml, main.py, command source, or output-behavior change appears in the summary. Makefile test-root is unchanged in function. No out-of-scope change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 97.22% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 72 functions across 8 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Fix the Markdown code-span spacing.

markdownlint-cli2 reports MD038 because aspect='<value>' starts with a space inside a code span. Keep the separator in prose and remove the internal space.

Proposed wording
-- `context` holds them as `scenario_id='<id>'`, with ` aspect='<value>'` for an undeclared aspect
+- `context` holds `scenario_id='<id>'`; when present, it adds a space followed by `aspect='<value>'` for an undeclared aspect

🔵 Needs a closer look

The parser misclassifies four-space-indented fences outside list containers as executable Python examples, so illustrative snippets can unexpectedly fail make qa.

Medium severity Require a list container before parsing indented code fences

tests/docs/pages.py:137

Four-space indentation alone does not establish a list container: without a preceding list, literal ```python fences at that indentation are ordinary indented code on GitHub. This parser instead returns a Python example, which test_python_example_runs executes, so an illustrative snippet can unexpectedly fail `make qa`. Track the surrounding list-container state before accepting deeply indented fences, while preserving fences inside real list items.

🔵 Needs a closer look

The checks can skip valid YAML blocks, accept package-test-only names as real identifiers, and incorrectly flag pages linked through valid Markdown navigation as orphaned.

No open issues 🎉

3 previously missed issues

In code that hasn't changed since last review

Medium severity Handle YAML fences with differing list and blockquote indentation

tests/docs/pages.py:159

Using the opener's indentation as the container boundary drops valid YAML content: a list fence opened at four spaces can have content at two, and a > ```yaml opener can be followed by >with: because the space after > is optional. Both cases produce empty blocks, so an undeclared tests-inputs key escapes validation. Track list-container indentation separately from fence indentation, normalize optional blockquote spacing during boundary checks and code extraction, and add regression cases for both forms.

Medium severity Recognize titled and reference-style Markdown links

tests/docs/pages.py:419

The orphan check rejects valid navigation links with titles or reference definitions. For example, [Action](docs/action.md "Action reference") and [Action][action] with [action]: docs/action.md both render a link on GitHub, but this extractor returns no destination, so test_no_page_is_an_orphan fails even though the page is reachable. Please recognize these Markdown link forms when collecting destinations and add regression cases for them.

Medium severity Exclude nested test directories from the identifier inventory

tests/docs/test_option_lists.py:346

:!tests/** excludes only the root test directory, so package tests still add test-only names such as PIN_HINT to the non-test inventory. Outside Errors/Warnings chapters, a misspelt code appearing in a package test can therefore be accepted as a real identifier. Exclude tests/ directories at every depth and add an inventory regression case using a package-test-only name.

Review effort: Balanced

- Update regex patterns for inline and reference links to support additional formats.
- Refactor code block handling to correctly identify nested structures and maintain context.
- Add new tests to validate link navigation and ensure orphan pages are correctly identified.
