#99: Add a local integration script that runs the three commands over given input files - #100
local-integration.sh gives an operator a repeatable run of the real toolkit over another component's output, on the machine that has that output, outside any workflow. Until now the only run over real input was living-doc <command> in the development venv, by hand. That run went through the CLI rather than main.py, had the development tools installed beside the runtime pins, validated nothing it wrote and recorded nothing about what ran.
Configuration:.env.local, git-ignored and read as data, never sourced, copied from the committed .env.local.example.
DOC_INPUT and TESTS_INPUT are required. VIEW is inner or release, default inner. OUT_DIR defaults to ./output. PYTHON is optional.
As committed, the example runs over tests/fixtures/collector-gh/ unchanged.
--check checks Python ≥ 3.10, git, the configuration and both inputs. It builds and runs nothing.
An input inside one of the directories a run clears fails the checks, --check included, before anything is deleted. The paths are compared as physical paths, and a symlinked input is followed to its file, so neither a symlink nor a case-insensitive file system can hide it.
The venv:.venv-local-integration/, built as action.yml builds its own.
It installs requirements.txt alone (pip install -r), from the repository root.
It unsets PIP_TARGET, PIP_PREFIX, PIP_USER, PIP_ROOT, PIP_PYTHON and PYTHONPATH, then checks that living_doc_cli.main imports.
It is reused only when the same interpreter built it from the same requirements.txt.
The runs:normalize-docs, normalize-tests, then coverage-matrix, each as the action runs it: main.py -E, with only the inputs that command takes.
Outputs go to $OUT_DIR/toolkit/<command>/, after the three directories are cleared.
A failing command stops the run with one line naming it, after the toolkit's own [ERROR] lines. A DOC_INPUT of another contract stops normalize-docs with [CONTRACT_MISMATCH].
The report:tools/local_integration.py, which imports living_doc_utilities and the standard library only.
It re-reads each output with read_artifact against its contract.
It prints the producer, run time, size, stats.cardinality, each metadata.source_inputs[] entry, and the warnings by code with their first ten occurrences. For coverage-matrix it also prints the root summary.
Per input it matches each of the input's warnings to one the output carries unchanged, every field the same but the context, which names the input first. It prints forwarded: <n> of <m> from <schema_version>. A failed validation, or an input warning that does not match, exits non-zero. A duplicate cannot stand in for a dropped warning.
In the report, text from the files is printed with control characters spelled out, so an input cannot forge a report line.
What it never does:
read a credential: it unsets the token names and every inherited INPUT_*;
work out another component's paths: you configure both files;
run in CI: no workflow names it.
Tests
tests/test_local_integration.py runs the real script end to end with no network install. The run happens in a copy whose venv is pre-seeded with the test's own interpreter, which already has the toolkit installed. The script reuses that venv, and only the pip install is skipped.
The configuration, main.py, the CLI, the report and read_artifact all run for real.
The end-to-end tests cover:
a whole run;
a DOC_INPUT of another contract stopping the run with the toolkit's [CONTRACT_MISMATCH] line, after clearing the previous output;
a failed report stopping the run;
a dummy token in the shell, in an inherited INPUT_* and in .env.local reaching no output line, no child process and no output file.
The report's matching is tested: a dropped warning, one duplicated in place of a dropped one, and a changed one each fail.
--check, the configuration's forms, the misconfigurations, a Python that does not run or is older than 3.10, and the usage run in a copy too. So does an input inside a directory the run clears, reached directly, through a directory symlink or through a file symlink, with and without --check. An input elsewhere under the output passes.
The script's static facts are checked: mode 100755, eol: lf, no workflow names it, the example's keys, the only install, no source or eval, and the git-ignored paths.

local-integration.sh: the three outputs are written and valid under <toolkit>/output/toolkit
Release Notes
Adds local-integration.sh, which runs normalize-docs, normalize-tests and coverage-matrix over a given doc-source.json and ui-tests.json in a venv of its own, outside any workflow, and validates and reports every output. See DEVELOPER.md § Local Integration Run.
Framework
Stays inside the frame. The script runs the toolkit's own transformations (F3), renders nothing and talks to no source system. The report reads every file through read_artifact and the contract models, mirroring none (F7).
… given input files
- local-integration.sh runs normalize-docs, normalize-tests and
coverage-matrix through main.py, as the action runs them, over the
doc-source.json and ui-tests.json named in .env.local, in a venv of its
own built from requirements.txt alone; --check builds and runs nothing.
- tools/local_integration.py re-reads each output with read_artifact,
reports it, and fails when an input warning is not forwarded.
- The script reads no credential: it unsets the token names and every
inherited INPUT_*, and reads .env.local as data, never sourced.
- .gitignore covers .env.local, the venv and /output/; .gitattributes keeps
*.sh LF; the root checks and coverage cover tools/.

Summary
Configuration and preflight .env.local.example, .gitattributes, .gitignore, local-integration.sh, tests/test_local_integration.py, CONTEXT.md, DEVELOPER.md
The script reads recognized .env.local settings as data, validates inputs and prerequisites, and supports --check. The example configuration, ignored local artifacts, documentation, and preflight tests cover these settings and checks.
Output reporting and validation tools/local_integration.py, tools/__init__.py, tests/test_local_integration.py
The reporter formats artifact metadata, cardinality, source inputs, and warnings. It checks warning forwarding and returns errors for invalid artifacts or missing forwarded warnings. Tests cover report output and failure cases.
The script prepares or reuses a dedicated virtual environment, runs normalize-docs, normalize-tests, and coverage-matrix through main.py, then validates and reports their outputs. Integration tests cover successful runs and failures. Documentation and root QA settings include the workflow and tools/.

Explanation
Issue #99 has one active direct link. Its coding requirements are met at head 8cf7eea, as far as the reviewed evidence shows.
Verified in local-integration.sh:
Configuration: .env.local is read as data, never sourced. Only the keys DOC_INPUT, TESTS_INPUT, VIEW, OUT_DIR and PYTHON are kept. DOC_INPUT and TESTS_INPUT are required. VIEW accepts only inner or release and defaults to inner. OUT_DIR defaults to ./output.
--check: exits after the Python >= 3.10, git, configuration and input checks. It runs before the venv is created.
Venv: .venv-local-integration/ is built and reused under the same rules as action.yml. It installs pip install -r requirements.txt from the repository root. It unsets PIP_TARGET, PIP_PREFIX, PIP_USER, PIP_ROOT, PIP_PYTHON and PYTHONPATH, then runs the living_doc_cli.main import check. I compared this with action.yml, and the set and the checks match.
Runs: normalize-docs, normalize-tests and coverage-matrix each run python -E main.py with the same INPUT_* mapping that action.yml uses. Outputs go to $OUT_DIR/toolkit/<command>/. The three directories are cleared first. A failing command stops the run with one line after the toolkit's own output.
Credentials: GITHUB_TOKEN, GH_TOKEN, GH_ENTERPRISE_TOKEN and GITHUB_ENTERPRISE_TOKEN are unset, and every inherited INPUT_* is unset.
Verified in tools/local_integration.py:
Each output is re-read with read_artifact.
The report prints the contract, producer, run time, size, stats.cardinality, each metadata.source_inputs[] entry, and warnings by code with the first ten occurrences.
Per input, it prints forwarded: <n> of <m>. It raises NotForwarded when the output forwards fewer warnings than the input holds. Failed validation returns exit code 1.
Control characters are escaped before printing.
Documentation and repository configuration: .env.local.example, .gitignore (.env.local, the venv and /output/), .gitattributes (*.sh as LF), DEVELOPER.md, README.md, Makefile and pyproject.toml (tools/ in the QA and coverage scope) are changed as the issue asks. The PR body names the canon rules with their pages and has the ## Framework section.
Tests: the PR body and the test-file summary state that tests/test_local_integration.py covers the end-to-end run, CONTRACT_MISMATCH, a failed report, token isolation, --check, the Python version check and the static facts. I did not read the test file. The git file mode 100755 cannot be confirmed from the file read. It rests on the test's static check and the PR description.
No unmet coding requirement was found. The requirement that no workflow names the script is stated by the PR. I did not search the workflows.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed path supports an objective of #99 or its acceptance criteria.
local-integration.sh, tools/local_integration.py, tools/init.py and tests/test_local_integration.py: the script, the report helper, its package marker and its tests. These are the core of the issue.
.env.local.example, .gitignore, .gitattributes: the configuration example, ignored paths and LF rule that #99 requires.
Makefile and pyproject.toml: bring tools/ into the root QA, lint, type and coverage scope. #99 requires that the root checks cover the helper.
DEVELOPER.md and README.md: the documentation that #99 requires. README.md only points to DEVELOPER.md.
CONTEXT.md: documents the new local run and its test. It is a documentation update for the same work.
No change was found that is unrelated to #99. Only the summaries were checked for the documentation and configuration files, not their full diffs.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description supplies a detailed Overview, a Release Notes entry, and a Related section with "Closes #99", so it covers every section of the template. It also adds a Framework checklist, a Rules table, Verification output, and Tests notes. The template's Overview and Release Notes are present and substantive. The Release Notes list has one real item, so the TBD placeholders are replaced. The Related section links issue #99. Missing items are minor: the Overview is long and mixes in implementation detail, and the Framework section is an extra heading not in the template. Those do not block the check, so the description is mostly complete.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 51.35% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 37 functions across 4 files.
