Replace minio as suggested S3 solution

Feature Request

The docs currently recommend minio as suggested S3-compatible storage solution, however, minio recently went into maintenance mode (with a push to their proprietary offering) and should probably not be recommended anymore.

There are several alternative open-source solutions that provide S3-compatible storage:

• Versity S3 Gateway: https://github.com/versity/versitygw

• Garage: https://github.com/deuxfleurs-org/garage
• rustfs: https://github.com/rustfs/rustfs

I'm currently trying out Versity with Docs and will be happy to report back how that goes.

Je l’utilise personnellement à petite échelle. Il fonctionne très bien et se fait discret (seulement 300M de RAM). Cela devrait convenir aux particuliers et petites structures.
Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de l’évaluer à grande échelle mais d’après sa documentation il ne devrait pas y avoir de problèmes.

Unfortunately Garage and several s3 providers do not work really well because they dont have object version feature as discussed here: #1060

Without versioning we can't provide version history and version restauration so it's a bit of blocker indeed.

After setting up a fresh install of docs with seaweedfs as S3 storage solution I can confirm that the Version History feature is compatible with docs. (Both viewing the history and restoring to a specific snapshot works as intended.)

I can add a vote for SeaweedFS: pretty simple to set up and it reliable for me so far, including versioning.

The impression I got from RustFS: impressive on the surface, a real mess once you scratch that surface. Possibly vibe-coded. They had security issues in the past: a hard-coded static token with privileged access. A clear "nope" for me.

For anyone's information: versioning does not seem to be in the 2026 roadmap for Garage so far.

I amend my previous statement: on 9 May and 5 May, the Garage repo owner said:

the Garage team plans to start working actively on this feature in the near term

In the upcoming months, we will work on an implementation of versioning internally, hopefully we will have something to show in less than a year.

I am using VersityGW for this, with data on NFS and metadata on local SSD.
I have not tried versioning.

Can confirm that VersityGW handles versioning fine (just don't forget to enable it both in versity and on the bucket). Seems like a reasonable alternative to Minio, easy to deploy even without setting up the webgui.

For the sake of completeness:

I found S4 Super Simple Storage Service last week, which uses Ceph RadosGW under the hood. So this should (?) have all the features Ceph RGW offers. But it is aimed more at testing and POCs than at productive setups. But maybe it would be something for the example chart?
