Simplification Summary

This document outlines what was removed from the original JavaFiddle to create the simplified version.

Removed Features

1. Framework Dependencies

  • ❌ SvelteKit: Removed entire Svelte framework dependency
  • ❌ Svelte Components: All .svelte files removed
  • ❌ Svelte Stores: State management simplified to vanilla JS/React

2. Complex UI Features

  • ❌ Sidebar: Examples, favorites, and settings sidebar removed
  • ❌ Menu Bar: Share, settings, and favorite buttons removed
  • ❌ File Tabs: Multi-file support removed (single Main.java only)
  • ❌ Settings Panel: Theme switcher and configuration options removed
  • ❌ Split Pane: Resizable panels removed (fixed layout now)

3. Data Persistence

  • ❌ LocalStorage: No saving of preferences or code
  • ❌ IndexedDB: No favorites or history storage
  • ❌ URL Fragments: No code sharing via URL compression
  • ❌ Auto-save: Code is not automatically saved

4. Social/Sharing Features

  • ❌ Share Button: No clipboard sharing of code
  • ❌ Favorites System: Cannot save/load favorite code snippets
  • ❌ Examples Library: Pre-built examples removed
  • ❌ Embed Mode: No iframe embedding support

5. Advanced Editor Features

  • ❌ Multiple Files: Only supports single Main.java file
  • ❌ File Management: No create/delete/rename files
  • ❌ Advanced Linting: Simplified error display
  • ❌ Auto-completion: Basic CodeMirror only
  • ❌ Themes: Fixed to one dark theme (customizable in React version)

6. Routing & Navigation

  • ❌ SvelteKit Routing: No client-side routing
  • ❌ Legacy Support: No backward compatibility routes
  • ❌ Embed Routes: No separate embed pages
  • ❌ Output Routes: No dedicated output pages

7. Build Complexity

  • ❌ Complex Build Process: Simplified to basic Vite setup
  • ❌ SSR: No server-side rendering
  • ❌ Multiple Adapters: Single static build
  • ❌ TypeScript Complexity: Simplified type usage

What Remains (Core Features)

✅ Essential Functionality

  • Code Editor: CodeMirror 6 with Java syntax highlighting
  • Java Compilation: CheerpJ-based compilation and execution
  • Console Output: Display of program output and errors
  • Visual Output: Support for Java Swing/AWT applications
  • Run Button: Simple execution trigger
  • Loading States: Basic execution feedback

✅ Technical Stack

  • CheerpJ: WebAssembly Java runtime
  • CodeMirror 6: Modern code editor
  • Vite: Fast development server
  • Modern JavaScript: ES modules, async/await

File Count Comparison

Original JavaFiddle Simplified Version
~50+ files ~8 files
Complex routing Single page
Multiple components One main component
Framework overhead Vanilla JS/React

Benefits of Simplification

1. Easier Integration

  • Drop into any project easily
  • No framework conflicts
  • Minimal dependencies

2. Better Performance

  • Smaller bundle size
  • Faster initial load
  • Less memory usage (except for CheerpJ itself)

3. Maintenance

  • Much easier to understand
  • Fewer moving parts
  • Easier to customize

4. Flexibility

  • Easy to adapt to different frameworks
  • Simple to modify styling
  • Can be embedded anywhere

Migration Path

If you need features that were removed:

  1. Multi-file support: Extend the current structure with a file tree
  2. Themes: Add theme switching to the React component
  3. Saving: Implement localStorage or database persistence
  4. Sharing: Add URL encoding/decoding for code sharing
  5. Examples: Create a simple examples dropdown

The simplified version serves as a solid foundation that can be extended as needed without the complexity of the original framework-heavy implementation.
