What is the problem that your suggestion solves?

We are currently using DataCite Fabrica to assign DOIs for Encyclopedia Arabica, a large-scale scientific initiative aimed at developing the first multidisciplinary Arabic encyclopedia. Each entry is authored by specialized Arabic researchers and peer-reviewed by subject-matter experts. The project is expected to include approximately 200,000 entries.

To better reflect the nature of this content in DOI metadata, we would like to propose the addition of a new resource type. Specifically, we suggest introducing "Encyclopedia Entry" as a recognized resource type in DataCite.

This addition would improve metadata accuracy, discoverability, and proper classification for projects like ours and similar scholarly reference works.

Thanks for this suggestion, @saoulifaycal-commits! This is an important use case which currently doesn't have a dedicated resourceTypeGeneral.

When evaluating new values for the resourceTypeGeneral controlled vocabulary, we look closely at existing free text values of resourceType to gauge community interest, evaluating both the number of DOIs and the number of users (repository accounts).

Right now, there are around 500 DOIs with resourceTypes similar to "encyclopedia entry" (https://api.datacite.org/dois?query=types.resourceType:*encyclopedia*) appearing across 11 repository accounts. Within these results, "encyclopediaarticle", "entry for encyclopedia", "encyclopedia entry" are the top 3 terms. There's not a precise threshold where we consider a new term, but we tend to look at the highest-volume ones first when working through our backlog.

We'll continue to monitor usage of this term (and variations) in the resourceType free text, including DOIs registered by Encyclopedia Arabica, to help us evaluate adding it to the controlled vocabulary.

DOI metadata can be updated at any time, so whenever the resourceTypeGeneral vocabulary is updated, you can change existing DOIs to the new vocabulary terms where applicable.

Thanks alot for your answer. In the upcoming months our Encyclopedia Arabica Portal will be ready and we expect it to start with thousands of entries. We hope this will triger the adding of the specific resourceType.
