What happened?
Today I tried to install ubuntu-26.04-desktop-amd64.iso on my Windows 11 Pro machine with VB 7.2.14. The Ubuntu installer showed the GRUB menu. I selected "Install Ubuntu". When I set the no. of CPUs to more than 1 the installation screen became black after that, the CPU usage was 100% of the no. of CPUs and nothing more happened. When I set the no. of CPUs to 1, Ubuntu started, asked me a coupe of questions and when it came to the installation it said "Installing the system..." and the running red bar suddenly stopped moving, the CPU usage was 100% and nothing more happened. I can reproduce this reliable on my machine. I think I tried about 10 times. I uninstalled VB, reinstalled it. No change. Still the same.
Than I remembered that the last reliable VirtualBox version was 7.2.6. I removed 7.2.14, installed 7.2.6, tried again and voila, the installation worked.
What I mean by "reliable" is, that since VB 7.2.8 each and every shutdown of an already existing Ubuntu VM hung.
I add the log files of the working V7.2.6 installation. I looked at the log files of 7.2.14 but they did not contain anything useful. The machine just hung, consuming 100% CPU of 1 core. The last lines in the 7.2.14 log being:
00:00:05.524873 AHCI#0: Reset the HBA 00:00:05.524896 VD#0: Cancelling all active requests 00:00:05.524937 AHCI#0: Port 0 reset 00:00:05.524955 VD#0: Cancelling all active requests
VBox.log
VBoxHardening.log
How can we reproduce this?
I can reproduce this by installing VirtualBox V7.2.14 on my Windows 11 Pro machine and trying to install Ubuntu 26.04 LTS desktop. 100%. I tried at least 10 times.
Did you upload all of your necessary log files, screenshots, etc.?
