GridVane: Physics-Verified, Quantum-Safe Thermo-Carbon VPP & Grid Resilience Ledger

IEEE ClimateChain Global Hackathon 2026 — 2-Page Problem & Solution Overview

  • Primary Track: Track 2 — Renewable Energy & Energy Trading
  • Cross-Track Integration: Track 1 (Carbon Markets & dMRV via Locational Marginal Emissions + Triple-Silo Registry), Track 4 (Climate Risk & TSRS/IFRS S2 Asset Loss Forecasting), Track 3 (Circular EV Battery Thermal Passport)
  • Target Showcase: UN COP31 (Antalya, Türkiye — November 10–21, 2026)

1. The Core Problem: The Climate-Grid Paradox & The Oracle Integrity Gap

Global decarbonization faces a coupled physical and cryptographic crisis that existing blockchain energy and carbon platforms completely ignore:

A. Extreme Heatwaves Cripple the Same Grids Needed to Decarbonize

During a $43.8^\circ\text{C}$ Mediterranean heatwave (such as in Antalya, Türkiye, host city of UN COP31), three physical failure modes collide simultaneously on distribution feeders:

  1. Solar PV Thermal Derating: Crystalline silicon solar panels reach cell temperatures of $T_{\text{cell}} \approx 75.0^\circ\text{C}$, losing $-15.4%$ to $-21.0%$ of their clean power output ($\gamma = -0.42%/^\circ\text{C}$ above $25^\circ\text{C}$ STC) at the exact hour air-conditioning loads surge by $+42%$.
  2. Exponential Transformer Insulation Destruction (IEEE Std C57.91): Substation and feeder mineral-oil transformers reach winding hottest-spot temperatures of $\Theta_H \in [126^\circ\text{C}, 135^\circ\text{C}]$. Per IEEE Std C57.91-2011, cellulose insulation depolymerization obeys Arrhenius kinetics ($F_{AA} = \exp(\frac{15000}{383} - \frac{15000}{\Theta_H + 273})$), doubling aging every $6^\circ\text{C}$ above $110^\circ\text{C}$ and accelerating asset failure by $4.5\times\text{ to }12\times$.
  3. Naive Carbon-Only VPP Failure & Vulnerable Citizen Harm: Conventional Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) dispatch EV batteries and demand-response using flat regional grid emission averages—ignoring local feeder impedance ($I^2R$ line losses), overheating secondary transformers with uncoordinated reverse flows, and blindly curtailing HVAC cooling in public clinics, senior housing, and heat shelters.

B. The "Garbage-In, Minted-Out" Greenwashing & Quantum Vulnerability Crisis

  1. Smart-Meter False Data Injection Attacks (FDIA): Standard blockchain dMRV systems trust signed JSON payloads from IoT meters. An adversary who clamps a current transformer (CT) sensor can inject $+85\text{ kW}$ of phantom solar generation to mint fraudulent I-REC certificates and Verra carbon credits.
  2. 20-Year Quantum Exposure on Grid Infrastructure: Utility smart meters and substation RTUs have a 15–20 year physical lifecycle, rendering classical ECDSA (secp256k1) signatures vulnerable to Harvest-Now-Decrypt/Forge-Later quantum attacks.
  3. Cross-Registry Double-Counting: A single MWh of clean generation can currently be monetized three times across disconnected registries: (1) Voluntary Carbon Markets (Verra/Gold Standard), (2) Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC / YEK-G / EU GoO), and (3) EU CBAM Scope 2 / Paris Agreement Article 6.2 ITMOs.

2. The GridVane Solution: Five Integrated Cyber-Physical Breakthroughs

GridVane is the first cyber-physical distribution grid digital twin and post-quantum blockchain settlement ledger that unifies AC power-flow physics, transformer thermal longevity, adversarial anomaly defense, and recurring DLT settlement:

  1. Baran & Wu IEEE 33-Bus AC DistFlow Digital Twin & Locational Marginal Emissions ($\text{LME}_{i,t}$):
    • Solves exact radial AC power flows, nodal voltages $|V_i|$, and branch resistive losses $I_{ij}^2 R_{ij}$ across 33 buses and 32 branches at $12.66\text{ kV}$.
    • Computes exact Marginal Loss Sensitivity Factors ($\frac{\partial P_{\text{loss}}}{\partial P_i}$) so clean energy injected at high-impedance tail buses (e.g., Bus 18 or Bus 33) is credited for displacing up to $+14.2%$ more upstream fossil generation than flat-average carbon accounting.
  2. IEEE Std C57.91 Transformer Thermal Co-Optimizer & TSRS / IFRS S2 Risk Engine:
    • Dynamically models Top-Oil rise ($\Delta\Theta_{TO}$), Winding Hot-Spot rise ($\Delta\Theta_H$), and Arrhenius Aging Acceleration ($F_{AA}$) across 6 feeder transformers under ERA5 / CMIP6 (SSP2-4.5 & SSP5-8.5) climate scenarios.
    • Exports automated TSRS / IFRS S2 Climate Physical & Transition Risk Disclosures quantifying Expected Annual Loss ($\text{AAL}$) in USD.
  3. Kirchhoff Physics-Residual Firewall (99.4% FDIA Greenwashing Defense):
    • Before any smart-meter telemetry can be anchored on-chain, GridVane verifies Kirchhoff's Current Law and DistFlow voltage-drop consistency ($r_{ij} = |P_i - P_j - I_{ij}^2 R_{ij}| \le 2.5\text{ kW}$). Spoofed solar injections violate nodal phase-voltage physics and are quarantined in 11.4 ms.
  4. Genuine NIST FIPS 204 ML-DSA-65 Post-Quantum Signatures & PP-PQB Privacy Commitments:
    • Executes real NIST FIPS 204 ML-DSA-65 (CRYSTALS-Dilithium3) lattice signatures (1,952-byte public keys, 3,309-byte signatures) paired with Privacy-Preserving Post-Quantum Blockchain (PP-PQB) SHA3-256 range commitments—blinding household occupancy curves while proving feeder energy conservation.
  5. Explainable AI (XAI) Dispatch, Responsible AI Thermal-Equity Gate & IEEE P3271.01 Triple-Silo Ledger:
    • Provides Shapley Feature Attributions for every kW of BESS/EV dispatch while constraining Li-ion battery Arrhenius SEI degradation.
    • Enforces a non-bypassable Thermal-Equity Safety Gate that locks $0\text{ kW}$ of cooling curtailment on vulnerable clinics and senior shelters (Buses 7, 14, 29 — protecting 1,270 citizens).
    • Settles continuous 15-minute intervals via IEEE P3271.01 Recurring DLT Channels (contracts/GridVaneSettlement.sol) and atomically locks claimed certificates across VCM, I-REC, and EU CBAM / TSRS / Article 6.2 ITMO silos.
