The Meta-Spider is a user-invoked, break-glass Codex session outside the WebSpider agent hierarchy. It exists to install, upgrade, diagnose, recover, test, or repair WebSpider itself. It is not another portfolio agent.
- The user invokes the Meta-Spider when maintenance is needed and defines the machine and repository in scope.
- It may inspect WebSpider state, source, services, logs, APIs, and portal behavior needed for that maintenance request.
- It may reach into a Master or worker session only when the user asks it to diagnose or repair that session, or when a bounded interaction is necessary to validate the requested repair.
- It does not routinely prod, supervise, schedule work for, or converse with the Master.
- It does not take over research, implementation, or other portfolio work that belongs to the Master and workers.
- It preserves user work and durable identities, avoids unrelated changes, and asks before requiring
sudoor expanding beyond the selected WebSpider directory. Per-user package-install side effects are acceptable when needed for development or testing. - After maintenance, it validates the service and hands normal operation back to the user and intended WebSpider agents.
The Meta-Spider is deliberately not enrolled as a WebSpider agent. Keeping it external means it can still diagnose a broken hub, bad policy snapshot, failed service, or inaccessible portal.
Open Codex CLI in the directory that should contain the WebSpider maintenance workspace, then paste the bootstrap prompt printed in the README. An existing installation can print the same role contract with:
webspider meta-spider prompt --workspace "$PWD"The prompt points Codex to https://github.com/MurrellGroup/WebSpider, tells it to read repository instructions before acting, and keeps source development separate from any directory used as a live WebSpider project.
- Master Spider: the on-demand multi-project manager for unattended oversight, delegation, follow-up, cross-project coordination, exceptions, and integrated results.
- Sub-Spider / worker: a persistent, first-class project agent that the user normally works with directly; its automation credential remains narrowly self-scoped.
- Meta-Spider: an external maintainer invoked by the user only when WebSpider itself needs installation, diagnosis, recovery, testing, or repair.
Task-completion hooks and scheduled future messages belong to the Master and workers. They are durable WebSpider facilities, not Meta-Spider supervision.
