+
+The Automatic Material System feeds filament to HacMan's Bambu printers.
+
+
+
+ The AMS 2 Pro feeds filament to the Bambu printers. Spools must sit correctly and rotate freely.
+
+
+## Before use
+
+- Confirm the intended spool and material.
+- Check that the spool fits and rotates freely.
+- Cut a damaged filament end cleanly.
+- Close the lid fully.
+- Confirm the material and colour shown in Bambu Studio.
+- Bambu RFID spools can populate material details automatically. Other brands need manual material and colour setup.
+
+## Loading filament
+
+1. Open the AMS lid.
+2. Place the spool in an empty slot so that it can rotate freely, with the filament feeding over the top of the spool towards the inlet.
+3. Cut the filament end cleanly.
+4. Gently push the grey feeder tab at the front of the slot.
+5. Feed the filament into that slot's inlet until the AMS detects it and starts loading.
+6. Stop pushing once the AMS motor has gripped the filament.
+7. Confirm the material and colour shown on the printer or in Bambu Studio before printing.
+8. Bambu RFID spools can populate this automatically. If using another brand, set or check the slot information manually rather than assuming the previous material and colour are still correct.
+9. Close the AMS lid before starting the print.
+
+## Spool rules
+
+Bare cardboard spools must not be used directly in an AMS. Transfer the filament to a suitable plastic spool or fit approved adapter rings.
+
+TPU must only be used in the AMS if it is specifically marked as suitable for AMS use. Standard flexible TPU should be printed without the AMS to avoid feed problems and clogs.
+
+AMS compatibility is not the same as nozzle compatibility. Flexible, absorbent, brittle, very stiff, rough or fibre-filled filaments can cause AMS feeding problems even if the printer nozzle can print them. If the spool or filament does not feed smoothly, stop and use the rear spool holder or ask for help.
+
+Do not force oversized, warped, damaged or poorly-wound spools into the AMS. The spool must fit cleanly, sit flat and rotate freely.
+
+Metal-filled filament is prohibited on HacMan printers.
+
+
+
+ Do not use bare cardboard spools in the AMS. Flexible TPU should only be used in the AMS if specifically marked as AMS-compatible.

+## Unloading filament
+
+Use the unload function on the printer or in Bambu Studio and allow the AMS to retract the filament from the printer back to the AMS.

+Once the filament has unloaded:
+
+1. Press the feeder tab for that slot.
+2. Remove the filament by hand.
+3. If there is resistance, do not force it. Ask for help.
+4. Remove the spool.
+5. Secure the free end in the spool holes or retaining clip immediately.
+6. Return Hackspace filament to storage, or take personal filament home or put it in your personal storage area if you have one.
+
+The manufacturer guide notes that the AMS rollers can sometimes remain engaged after an error or power interruption. If the filament does not come out smoothly, stop rather than pulling hard.
+
+
+
+ Secure the free end immediately after unloading filament to prevent tangles.

+## Slicing
+
+Use Bambu Studio and select the approved profile for the exact physical printer: P1S or P2S, with a 0.4 mm nozzle. Follow the [Bambu Studio beginner guide](bambu_studio.md).
+
+Confirm the physical build-plate type and filament/AMS mapping before sending the job.
+
+## Filament sources
+
+Use the [AMS 2 Pro](ams2pro.md) or the rear spool holder. Never force filament into a feed path.
+
+Bare cardboard spools are prohibited in the AMS.
+
+Abrasive filaments are not compatible with the AMS 2 Pro. Print them from the rear spool holder instead.
+
+Flexible filaments are not compatible with the AMS 2 Pro unless the filament is specifically labelled as suitable for AMS use.
+
+To load an AMS slot, place the spool in the slot, press the grey feeder tab and feed the filament in until the AMS detects it and starts feeding automatically. Do not also run the printer's manual load command.
+
+After loading or changing spools, check the material recorded for every slot and synchronise Bambu Studio before slicing.
+
+
+
+ Check the AMS slots before printing and synchronise the filament information in Bambu Studio.
+
+
+## Materials
+
+ABS and ASA may be printed only on these enclosed, carbon-filtered printers. Metal-filled filament is prohibited.
+
+The Bambu printers have hardened nozzles, but AMS compatibility is stricter than printer compatibility. If a material is abrasive, flexible, brittle, rough or otherwise unusual, use the rear spool holder or ask before using it with the AMS.
+
+## Starting a print
+
+In Bambu Studio's send dialog, confirm:
+
+- the intended physical printer;
+- build-plate type;
+- nozzle/profile;
+- material and AMS slot mapping; and
+- displayed thumbnail, time and weight.
+
+Do not send to a printer that is busy, out of service or not the one used for slicing. Watch the first layer after starting.
+
+
+
+ Before sending a Bambu print, check the printer, plate type and filament mapping.
+
+
+## Faults
+
+Do not dismantle the enclosure, print head, feeder or AMS. Do not update firmware or change machine-wide settings unless authorised. Stop and report errors that are not resolved by the basic on-screen procedure.

+# Beginner's Guide to Bambu Studio
+
+This guide covers the settings most beginners need to prepare and send a model. It does not cover multi-colour painting, modifiers or detailed profile tuning.
+
+
+
+ The Prepare view shows the selected printer, plate type, project filaments, the model on the build plate and the Slice plate button.
+
+
+## 1. Start a project and import the model
+
+Open a new project, then drag an STL, 3MF or STEP file onto the virtual plate or use **Import**.
+
+If a downloaded 3MF asks whether to open the complete project or import geometry, use **geometry only** unless you trust and intend to use the supplied printer and filament settings.
+
+## 2. Select the exact printer
+
+Choose the HacMan profile for the physical printer you intend to use:
+
+- Bambu Lab P1S with 0.4 mm nozzle; or
+- Bambu Lab P2S with 0.4 mm nozzle.
+
+⚠ **Check:** P1S and P2S profiles are not interchangeable. Confirm the printer name again in the send dialog before starting.
+
+
+
+ On the Device tab, the current printer is shown on the left. Click the arrow next to the printer name to open the printer list.
+
+
+## 3. Select the build plate
+
+Choose the plate type that is physically fitted to the printer. The slicer uses this choice to set plate temperature and other behaviour.
+
+
+
+ The plate type selector is shown in the Prepare view. Match this to the build plate fitted to the printer.
+
+
+## 4. Synchronise the AMS filaments
+
+Bambu Studio keeps two related lists:
+
+- the **project filament list** in the Prepare tab, which tells the slicer which materials the model will use; and
+- the **physical AMS slots**, which show the spools currently loaded in the selected printer.
+
+They are not automatically the same. After selecting the intended physical printer:
+
+1. Check that the AMS spools are loaded and identified correctly on the printer's **Device** page.
+2. Return to **Prepare**.
+3. In the Filament section, press the **Synchronise/Resync AMS filaments** button beside the filament list.
+4. Confirm the synchronisation when prompted. This replaces or updates the project filament list from the selected printer's AMS.
+5. Check every imported material. For non-RFID or third-party spools, confirm that the material profile has been entered correctly rather than relying on the displayed colour.
+
+Synchronise again if someone changes a spool after the project was opened.
+
+⚠ **Check:** Make sure Bambu Studio is connected to the intended P1S or P2S before synchronising. Otherwise you may import the filament list from the wrong printer.
+
+
+
+ Use Sync info to synchronise printer, nozzle and AMS information. After nozzle information is synced, continue to sync the AMS filaments.
+
+
+## 5. Select which filament prints the model
+
+Synchronising makes the filaments available to the project; it does not necessarily assign the desired one to each model.
+
+For a single-colour model:
+
+1. Select the model on the plate or in the Objects list.
+2. Use its filament/colour control, or right-click and choose **Change filament**.
+3. Select the numbered project filament that matches the material and colour you want.
+4. Confirm that the model changes to the selected filament colour in Prepare.
+
+For a plate containing separate objects, select each object and assign its filament in the same way. Do not use colour painting for an ordinary single-colour object.
+
+Before slicing, check the material name as well as the colour. Two spools can look similar but require different temperatures.
+
+📌 **HacMan rules:** Do not put bare cardboard spools in the AMS. ABS and ASA may only be printed on the enclosed Bambu printers. Metal-filled filament is prohibited.
+
+
+
+ Right-click an object and use Change Filament to choose which AMS slot or material that object should print with.
+
+
+## 6. Choose a standard process
+
+For an ordinary first print, use a standard **0.20 mm** process profile. Leave advanced settings at the HacMan defaults unless you understand why they need changing.
+
+## 7. Check orientation and placement
+
+Make sure the model:
+
+- sits flat on the plate;
+- stays inside the printable area; and
+- has a sensible, stable face against the plate.
+
+Use **Lay on Face** or **Auto Orient** if necessary. Ask for help if large areas would start in mid-air, as the model may need supports.
+
+## 8. Decide whether the model needs supports
+
+Each new layer needs plastic or the build plate beneath it. An **overhang** is a feature that extends sideways beyond the layer below. Gentle slopes may print unaided, while steep overhangs and features beginning in mid-air may need temporary support material.
+
+First try orienting the model to reduce unsupported areas. If support is still required, enable **Support**. Start with support from the build plate only where practical; use support everywhere only when the required area cannot be reached from the plate.
+
+Supports add time and filament and may mark the model. Inspect them in Preview and make sure they can be removed after printing.
+
+
+
+ Support settings are under the Support tab. Supports are used when parts of the model would otherwise print into mid-air.
+
+
+## 9. Choose infill and wall thickness
+
+**Infill** is the internal structure inside the model. It supports top surfaces and helps resist crushing.
+
+- **15% infill** is a sensible starting point for decorative and lightly loaded parts.
+- Increase it for compression loads or when top surfaces need more internal support.
+- 100% infill is rarely necessary.
+
+The outer shell is made from **wall loops**. More walls usually improve general strength more efficiently than a large increase in infill:
+
+- use the standard profile for ordinary models;
+- try **3–4 wall loops** for a stronger functional part; and
+- orient the part so loads do not try to split it between layers.
+
+
+
+ Infill settings are under Strength. Higher infill can make some parts stronger, but wall thickness often matters more.
+
+
+
+
+ Wall loops are under Strength → Walls. Increasing wall loops often improves part strength more effectively than simply increasing infill.
+
+
+## 10. Add a brim when needed
+
+A **brim** is a thin, single-layer border attached around the model's base. It increases contact with the build plate and helps narrow, tall or corner-prone models remain attached.
+
+Use one when the footprint is small or likely to lift. A broad, stable model normally does not need it. The brim must be removed after printing and may leave a small edge to tidy.
+
+
+
+ Brim and skirt settings are under Others → Bed adhesion. A brim can help small or narrow parts stay attached to the build plate.
+
+
+## 11. Slice the plate
+
+Select **Slice plate**.
+
+Bambu Studio opens Preview and calculates print time and filament use.
+
+## 12. Inspect the preview
+
+Use the vertical layer slider to examine the result. Check that:
+
+- the complete model is present;
+- every section is supported by the plate, the previous layer or generated supports;
+- the time and filament estimates are plausible; and
+- the colours/filament assignments match your intention.
+
+Return to Prepare and correct anything unexpected before printing.
+
+## 13. Map project filaments to physical AMS slots and send
+
+Select **Print plate**. In the send dialog:
+
+1. Choose the intended physical HacMan printer.
+2. Confirm the build plate type.
+3. In the filament-mapping area, match each **project filament** used by the sliced model to the correct **physical AMS slot**. The material types must be compatible; check both the slot number and material name.
+4. Review the displayed time, weight and thumbnail.
+5. If a filament is shown as **Unmapped**, do not send the job. Correct the project filament, load the required material, or choose the correct compatible AMS slot.
+6. Send the job only when every item is correct.
+
+If the intended printer is unavailable, out of service or already in use, cancel the send operation.
+
+
+
+ Before sending, check the printer, plate type and filament. Bambu Studio may ask you to allocate a filament here and will only offer compatible material types for the model.
+
+
+## Before pressing Print
+
+- Correct P1S or P2S profile
+- Correct 0.4 mm nozzle
+- Correct physical plate type
+- Correct material and AMS slot
+- AMS synchronised after any spool change
+- Each object assigned to the intended project filament
+- Final project-to-AMS mapping checked
+- Model fits and sits flat
+- Supports added only where needed
+- Infill and wall-loop count suitable for the job
+- Brim added if the footprint needs more adhesion
+- Preview checked
+- Physical build plate clean, dry and correctly fitted

+The information on this page is intended for inducted HacMan members who want to set up their own computer to connect to the printers. Your computer must be connected to the Hackspace Wi-Fi or wired network. Do not change printer network modes, shared credentials or machine-wide settings.

+2. Open PrusaSlicer and install the Original Prusa MK4 0.4 mm preset if it is not already present.
+3. Open the physical-printer configuration and add the intended printer.
+4. Enter its name, IP address and PrusaLink key from the table above.
+5. Save it as a physical printer.
+6. Slice with that physical printer selected, check Preview, then use the bottom-right **G** button to send the file.
+
+If sending fails, first check that a physical printer—not the generic MK4 preset—is selected.
+
+### Use PrusaLink in a browser
+
+It is acceptable to use the Prusa MK4 printers with a different slicer or correctly prepared custom G-code, provided the file is suitable for the selected printer, nozzle and filament.
+
+Visit the printer's IP address from a device connected to the Hackspace network. Use:
+
+- username: `maker`
+- password: the matching PrusaLink key above
+
+This can be used to upload correctly prepared G-code without configuring PrusaSlicer. Confirm that the file was sliced for the correct MK4 and nozzle before uploading it.
+

+
+Hackspace filament costs **4p per gram**. Payment is made through the Snackspace tuck shop and applies to all material used, including failed and cancelled prints.

+## Personal filament
+

+# Getting Started
+
+Complete the [self-induction](induction.md) and pass the online assessment before independent use.
+
+## 1. Prepare the model
+
+You can design your own model in CAD, but you do not need to do that for your first print. Many members start with a ready-made STL or 3MF file from sites such as [Printables](https://www.printables.com/), [MakerWorld](https://makerworld.com/), [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/), [Thangs](https://thangs.com/) or [MyMiniFactory](https://www.myminifactory.com/).

+For a first print, choose something small, simple and clearly marked as printable. Check the licence and avoid very large or complex models until you are comfortable with the workflow.

+Open the model in [PrusaSlicer](prusaslicer.md) for a Prusa MK4 or [Bambu Studio](bambu_studio.md) for a Bambu printer. Select the exact printer, nozzle, build plate where applicable and filament profile.

+Slice the model and inspect the preview. Check the estimated time and filament use.

+## 2. Check the printer
+
+- Available and not marked out of service
+- Build plate clean, dry and correctly fitted
+- Correct filament loaded and enough remaining
+- Spool able to rotate freely
+- No previous print, tool or debris in the build area

+ Leave printers clean, tidy and ready for the next member.
+

+## 3. Start and watch
+
+Start the job and remain beside the printer until the first layer is complete. Stop if the filament does not stick, the print lifts, spaghetti forms, feeding stops or the printer behaves unexpectedly.

+
+
+ A good first layer should be smooth and firmly attached to the build plate.
+
+
+A competent member must remain in the Hackspace for the entire print.
+
+## 4. Remove the print
+
+Let the plate cool where possible. Remove it from the printer and flex it gently away from people. Clean, dry and refit it squarely.
+
+
+
+ Remove the build plate from the printer before flexing it to release a print.
+
+
+## 5. Finish
+
+Remove waste, return tools, secure filament ends, report faults and pay 4p per gram through Snackspace for all Hackspace filament used.

+
+ Return tools and dispose of waste before leaving the printer area.

+5. **Nozzle / hot end** - melts plastic and gets very hot.
+6. **Build plate** - the removable sheet the print sticks to.
+7. **Screen and controls** - used to control the printer and read messages.
+8. **Z-axis upright** - part of the moving frame; keep hands clear while the printer moves.

+1. Never leave a running printer without a competent member in the Hackspace. This is an insurance requirement.

+
+Before using an AMS, check that the spool rotates freely, the filament is correctly routed and the lid closes properly.
+
+Bambu filament spools with RFID can tell the printer what material and colour they are. Other filament brands need the AMS slot material and colour to be set manually on the printer or in Bambu Studio.
+
+To load filament into the AMS, place the spool in an empty slot, cut the filament end cleanly, gently push the grey feeder tab and feed the filament into the slot inlet until the AMS detects it and starts loading. Do not keep pushing once the AMS motor has gripped the filament.
+
+To unload filament from the AMS, use the printer or Bambu Studio unload function and wait for the AMS to retract the filament. Then press the feeder tab and remove the filament by hand. If there is resistance, do not force it; ask for help. Once removed, secure the loose end of the spool immediately.

+- filament does not stick;
+- the print lifts or detaches;
+- filament collects around the nozzle or forms “spaghetti”;

+- continuing may damage the printer.

+Once the first layer is successful, you may use other parts of the Hackspace, but a competent member must remain present and the print should be checked periodically.

+If the print remains stuck, allow more cooling and ask for help. Remove loose plastic, check that the plate is clean and dry, and refit it squarely while keeping fingers clear of the magnets.

+This guide covers the settings most beginners need to turn a model into a printable file. It does not cover advanced modifiers or detailed tuning.

+## 1. Open your model
+
+Drag an STL, 3MF, STEP or OBJ file onto the build plate, or select **Add** from the top toolbar.

+The model should appear on the virtual build plate. If a 3MF project asks whether to load the whole project or geometry only, use **geometry only** unless you trust and intend to use the supplied printer settings.

+ Infill settings are in Print Settings → Infill. Fill density controls how much internal structure the print has.

+ Perimeter settings are in Print Settings → Layers and perimeters. Increasing perimeters is often a good way to improve part strength.
+
+
+## 8. Add a brim when needed
+
+A **brim** is a thin, single-layer border attached to the bottom edge of the model. It increases contact with the plate and can help narrow, tall or corner-prone models stay attached.
+
+Use a brim when the model has a small footprint or is likely to lift. It must be removed after printing and may leave a small edge to tidy, so it is unnecessary for a broad, stable model that already adheres well.
+
+
+
+ Skirt and brim settings are in Print Settings → Skirt and brim. A brim can help small or narrow parts stay attached to the build plate.

+## 9. Slice
+
+Select **Slice now**.
+
+PrusaSlicer changes to Preview and calculates the print time and filament usage.
+
+## 10. Inspect the preview
+
+Use the vertical layer slider to look through the print. Check that:
+
+- the complete model is present;
+- every section is supported by the plate, the previous layer or generated supports;
+- there are no unexpected parts outside the model; and
+- the time and filament estimates are plausible.
+
+If the preview looks wrong, return to the 3D view and fix the setup before exporting.
+
+## 11. Send the job from a HacMan PC
+
+On a HacMan PC, select the required machine from the **Physical printer** selector. After slicing and checking Preview, press the **G button in the bottom-right corner** to send the G-code to that printer.
+
+Confirm that the physical printer name is correct before sending. Do not send to a machine that is already in use or marked out of service. At the printer, check that the received filename, thumbnail and estimated time match the intended job before starting it.
+

+ On the Hackspace PCs, once a physical Prusa printer is selected, use the G button in the bottom-right to send the file to the printer.

+If the configured network workflow is unavailable, ask another member rather than changing connection settings. USB export may be used if that is the current fallback procedure.

+- Correct 0.4 mm nozzle

+- Supports added only where needed
+- Infill and perimeter count suitable for the job
+- Brim added if the footprint needs more adhesion

+- Build plate clean, dry and correctly fitted
+- Correct filament loaded
+
+Stay and watch the first layer after the print starts.

+# Basic Troubleshooting
+
+This page covers checks inducted members may perform without dismantling or adjusting a printer.
+
+## Print does not stick
+
+Stop the print. Remove and clean the build plate, dry it completely, refit it correctly and confirm that the slicer used the right printer, plate and material profiles.
+
+
+
+ A poor first layer should be stopped and investigated before trying again.
+
+
+## Print lifts or spaghetti forms
+
+Stop the print. Do not push a moving print back onto the plate. If plastic has collected around the nozzle or print head, stop using the printer and ask for help.
+
+
+
+ Spaghetti failures should be stopped promptly.
+
+
+
+
+ If filament builds up around the nozzle or print head, stop and ask for help.
+
+
+## Filament does not load
+
+Do not force it. Confirm the spool rotates, the filament end is cleanly cut and the correct load function is active. If it still fails, ask for help.
+
+## AMS error
+
+Confirm the spool rotates and no visible external obstruction exists. Do not pull filament or dismantle the AMS. Ask for help if the displayed procedure does not resolve it.
+
+## Printer error or unusual noise
+
+Pause or cancel the job, note or photograph the message and report the fault. Do not repeatedly restart a printer that continues to error.

+
+ Do not use printers marked out of service.
+
+
+## Smoke, overheating or electrical damage
+
+Stop the printer and isolate power if safe. Alert other members and follow the Hackspace emergency procedure.

+## Report, do not repair
+
+Members must not replace nozzles, adjust belts, open electrical enclosures, clear internal jams or alter hardware unless authorised.
+
+Report faults or changed connection details by contacting the 3D printing team on Telegram, posting on the HacMan forum, or submitting a broken-tool report using one of the QR codes displayed around the Hackspace.
