Summary

The GSF Green Software Patterns working group met to advance three items: finalising Paula de Matos's first UX design pattern for publication, reviewing the 9 new Green AI patterns proposed by Naveen Senwari, and planning the next phase of catalogue consolidation. Decisions were reached on all three, with clear owners and a target checkpoint of the first-week-of-July Green AI Committee call.

Key Discussions

Typography pattern title

• The group agreed pattern titles should follow the established action-verb convention. After discussion, "prioritize" was selected as the lead verb, framing the pattern as a design decision about when to use system fonts based on user requirements — not a blanket instruction. A quick test with an external colleague confirmed the title was sufficiently clear.

Green AI patterns (Naveen's 9 proposals)

• Russ presented 9 new AI-focused patterns created using the GSF pattern skill, based on Naveen's proposals, with cost and carbon impact fields added. These have been shared with the Green AI Committee. A new member from Technical University Nuremberg has begun leaving comments. The group agreed these should be reviewed and signed off by Naveen (returning next week) and the Green AI Committee ahead of the July committee call.
• Discussion covered how AI patterns will be classified: tagged for discoverability and assigned to existing SDLC categories with AI/ML Engineer as the primary persona, with the option of creating a subcategory as the AI pattern set grows.

Patterns 2.1 — catalogue consolidation and backlog

• Russ presented an overview of outstanding work: patterns to delete (too specific or outdated), patterns to merge (covering the same ground from different angles), and a backlog of 13 proposed new patterns. The group agreed to dedicate time in the next call to work through the 13 proposals together.
• Russ proposed exploring a GitHub Actions setup to let key contributors interact with the pattern skill directly via issues, reducing the operational bottleneck.
• Discussion also touched on external catalogue integration: the group agreed not to import other organisations' patterns, but to instead maintain a curated reference list linking to mature external resources such as the W3C Sustainable Web Guidelines.

• Paula's typography pattern title updated to use "prioritize" as action verb; pattern approved for merge once title is confirmed.
• Naveen's 9 AI patterns to go through Green AI Committee review ahead of first-week-of-July call, with Naveen's sign-off required on return.
• AI patterns will use tags and SDLC category assignments rather than a dedicated AI category (subject to review as volume grows).
