A question regarding pots/sliders #7908

Would you like the short or long answer? 🤪 In a nutshell, a switch (generally) only needs either one or two pins that can sense a ON or OFF state (you need 1 for a 2POS switch, and 2 for a 3POS switch). Whereas for a pot/slider, you need a pin that can sense a changing voltage (analog to digital conversion or ADC). So some switch pins might be able to be used as well as pot pins. Some handsets already support this, via the FLEX switch options, where you can set the POT/SLIDER to FLEX, and then tell it what sort of switch you have connected. Some handsets also have one or two extra unallocated ports. It is really a handset specific question in the first instance. Beyond that, you really need to build customised firmware with different pin mappings, which is a lot easier now that you can use json files in https://github.com/EdgeTX/edgetx/blob/main/radio/src/boards/hw_defs to configure a lot of the board to physical hardware mapping for a given handset. By finding out what MCU/CPU it uses (it'll be listed in a cmakelists.txt file in https://github.com/EdgeTX/edgetx/tree/main/radio/src/targets, you can then look up what each pin used for a switch does, and if it supports use as an ADC pin, you might be able to just re-assign it. There is more to it than that, but that is the gist of it. |
Uh oh!

Are they hardware, or software-based? If they are software-based, it would be great to have the ability to customize the firmware for instance, to swap a 3-position switch for a pot or slider. Those of us involved in DIY and transmitter modifications would really appreciate such an option!
