feat: Add agent specifications and contributing guidelines for the Living Documentation Toolkit (#53)
- Introduced `senior-developer.agent.md` and `specification-master.agent.md` to define roles and responsibilities for development and specification processes. - Created `CONTRIBUTING.md` to outline guidelines for reporting bugs, proposing features, and contributing to development. - Added `SPEC.md` to document the prospective-spec process for new services and adapters. - Updated `pr.md` to summarize the Phase 0 toolkit rollout, including changes to documentation and Python version requirements.

# `.claude/` helper set
2+
3+
Productivity helpers for roadmap/spec-driven work in `living-doc-toolkit`. Copied and
4+
adapted from the ecosystem reference copy in `living-doc-collector-gh/.claude/` (the
5+
repo-specific parts here are the monorepo `make` vocabulary, the mock/fixture table, and
6+
the doc paths).
7+
8+
These helpers are **acceleration, not dependency**. Every task they describe can be done by
9+
hand, just slower. Nothing in CI or the release path requires them.
10+
11+
## What's here
12+
13+
| File | Kind | Purpose |
14+
|---|---|---|
15+
| `commands/implement-task.md` | slash command | Drive one roadmap task from its spec to a PR-ready description. |
16+
| `commands/verify-pr-ready.md` | slash command | Verify-only gate: is this branch PR-ready? one yes/no. |
17+
| `agents/test-author.md` | subagent | Write deterministic pytest tests using this repo's real mock/fixture surface. |
18+
| `rules/docs-lifecycle.md` | rule | Implemented `SPEC.md` sections **move** into the live docs. |
19+
20+
## How the two commands relate
21+
22+
Both check **acceptance criteria against the actual code** — reading the return annotation,
23+
the sort call, the guard position, the literal `pyproject.toml` value — never "a test with
24+
that name is green".
25+
26+
- **`/implement-task <id>`** is the full lifecycle: read the task → read every referenced
27+
file → implement → `make qa` (or `make qa-<alias>`) until green → verify each acceptance
28+
criterion against code → write the `## Overview` / `## Release Notes` / `## Related` PR
29+
description → stop. It collapses the `specification-master` → `senior-developer` →
30+
`sdet` → `reviewer` agent sequence into one driven command.
31+
32+
- **`/verify-pr-ready <id>`** is the lighter companion for right before opening a PR —
33+
useful when a human did most of the implementation. It re-checks every acceptance
34+
criterion against code, runs `make qa`, runs the `reviewer` agent, and outputs a single
35+
`PR-READY: yes/no` with a specific fix list when the answer is no. It does not implement
36+
anything.
37+
38+
Typical flow: `/implement-task` to build it, then `/verify-pr-ready` as the final gate
39+
before opening the PR.
40+
41+
## Relationship to `.github/agents/`
42+
43+
The `.github/agents/` board (`specification-master`, `senior-developer`, `sdet`,
44+
`reviewer`, `devops-engineer`) stays the source of truth for role behavior. `test-author`
45+
here is `sdet` plus the concrete repo mock table; `/verify-pr-ready` invokes `reviewer`.

5+

6+
7+
You write tests for `living-doc-toolkit`. You are the `sdet` agent's principles
8+
(determinism, fast feedback, success + failure coverage) plus this repo's **concrete mock
9+
and fixture surface** — so you isolate the right boundary on the first try instead of
10+
guessing.
11+
12+
## Rules
13+
14+
- Must use `pytest` + `pytest-mock` (`mocker`) + `pytest-cov`. Tests live in each package's
15+
own `tests/` directory, mirroring its `src/` layout; cross-package golden and
16+
compatibility checks live in the repo-root `tests/` and per-service `verifications/`.
17+
- The pipeline makes no network calls — there is nothing external to stub. Must isolate
18+
file I/O to `tmp_path` and fixtures, never the ambient filesystem.
19+
- Must mock `datetime.now` where a test compares against a golden file, so `generated_at`
20+
is deterministic.
21+
- Must cover the success path and the failure/edge paths for the changed logic.
22+
- Must assert on behavior — return values, raised errors, error-message prefixes, exit
23+
codes, serialized JSON keys and `schema_version`.
24+
- Prefer adding to each package's `tests/conftest.py` over duplicating setup.
25+
- Must keep the suite green under `make test-<alias>` / `make coverage-<alias>` (≥ 80% per
26+
package).
27+
28+
## Mock / fixture cheat-table (sourced from what already exists in `tests/`)
29+
30+
| What you need to fake | Pattern used in this repo | Where to copy it from |
31+
|---|---|---|
32+
| Input / output JSON files | write the payload under `tmp_path`, pass its path to `loader.py` / the service; assert on the written output file | `packages/services/*/tests/test_service.py` |
33+
| Pure transforms (`normalizer`, `matcher`, `summary`, `loader`, adapter `parser`) | call with parsed dict/list input, assert on the returned structure — no mocks | `packages/services/coverage_matrix/tests/test_matcher.py`, `test_summary.py`, `test_loader.py` |
34+
| Adapter selection | shape the payload so `detector.can_handle()` matches, or pass `--source collector-gh`; assert the chosen adapter | `packages/adapters/collector_gh/tests/` |
35+
| Version-compatibility warning | set `metadata.producer.version` outside the confirmed range; assert a `VERSION_MISMATCH` entry in `audit.trace[].warnings[]`, not a raise | `packages/adapters/collector_gh/tests/` |
36+
| collector-gh schema compatibility across versions | golden JSON fixtures, one directory per version, parametrized over the discovered set | `tests/fixtures/collector_gh/v0.9.0/`, `v1.0.0/`, `v1.2.0/`, `v2.0.0/`; `verifications/verify_compatibility.py` |
37+
| Golden output regression | compare the built output against `tests/fixtures/golden/v<X.Y.Z>/expected_output.json` | `packages/services/coverage_matrix/tests/integration/test_golden_files.py`; `verifications/verify_golden.py` |
38+
| Pydantic model / dataclass round-trip (`PdfReadyV1`, `AuditEnvelopeV1`, `CoverageItem`) | build the object, serialize, assert on keys/structure and `schema_version`; no I/O | `packages/datasets_pdf/tests/` |
39+
| Exported JSON Schema drift | regenerate via the package's `schema_export` / `schema.py` and diff against `schemas/*.schema.json` | `packages/datasets_pdf/tests/test_schema_export.py`, `packages/adapters/collector_gh` |
40+
| CLI invocation + exit code + output prefix | `click.testing.CliRunner().invoke(cli, [...])`, assert `result.exit_code` and `result.output` | `apps/cli/tests/test_cli.py`, `apps/cli/tests/integration/test_cli_invocation.py` |
41+
| Clock (`datetime.now(timezone.utc)`) | `mocker.patch("<module>.datetime")`, set `.now.return_value` | `packages/services/*/tests/` |
42+
| Logging assertions | `mocker.patch("<module>.logger")`, assert on `.warning` / `.error` | `packages/services/*/tests/` |
43+
44+
**Adding a new collector-gh compatibility case:** drop a `doc-issues.json` under
45+
`tests/fixtures/collector_gh/v<X.Y.Z>/input/`. The parametrized compatibility tests and
46+
`verifications/verify_compatibility.py` discover it automatically — do not hard-code the
47+
version list.
48+
49+
**No HTTP surface:** the toolkit never calls a network service. If a change ever
50+
introduces one, that is a design red flag — the pipeline is offline and AI-free by
51+
contract. Raise it rather than adding an HTTP mock.
52+
53+
## Output
54+
55+
- The test files/additions themselves.
56+
- A recap ≤ 10 lines: what is covered (success + failure paths), how to run it
57+
(`make test-<alias>` / `make coverage-<alias>`), any coverage gap and why.

description: Implement a Phase 0 / roadmap task end to end, from its spec to a PR-ready description.
3+
argument-hint: <task-id> (e.g. P0-TK-3) [path-or-URL to the task list, if not the default]
4+
---
5+
6+
You are driving a single roadmap task to completion in `living-doc-toolkit`.
7+
Follow these steps **in this exact order**. Do not skip or reorder them.
8+
9+
Task ID: `$1`
10+
Task-list source (optional override): `$2`
11+
12+
## 1. Read the task
13+
14+
- Locate task `$1` in the Phase 0 task list (`living-doc/docs/specs/phase-0-tasklist.md`)
15+
or the roadmap (`living-doc/docs/specs/roadmap.md`). If `$2` is given, read it there.
16+
- Read the task's **prompt** and its **acceptance criteria** in full. Also read the
17+
linked GitHub issue if the task names one.
18+
- Write the acceptance criteria out as a numbered checklist you will verify against code
19+
in step 5. Do not start work until this list is explicit.
20+
21+
## 2. Read every file the task references — before writing any code
22+
23+
- Open every spec, doc, config, and source file named in the task prompt, its "Spec refs"
24+
line, and its acceptance criteria. Follow one hop of cross-references (a spec section that
25+
points at another spec section).
26+
- Read the existing code the change touches and the tests that already cover it, so the
27+
implementation matches repo patterns (`.github/copilot-instructions.md`,
28+
`.github/copilot-review-rules.md`).
29+
- For a monorepo change, identify which of the six packages the task touches — `core`,
30+
`datasets_pdf`, `adapters/collector_gh`, `services/normalize_issues`,
31+
`services/coverage_matrix`, `apps/cli` — and respect the dependency rules.
32+
- If the task is ambiguous after reading, stop and ask — do not guess.
33+
34+
## 3. Implement to the spec exactly
35+
36+
- Make the smallest change that satisfies the spec. Match existing structure, naming,
37+
logging style (lazy `%` formatting, no `print`), and import conventions.
38+
- Prefer a change that touches one package. Split a cross-package change unless the parts
39+
must change together.
40+
- Add or update tests for every new or changed code path (success + failure). Use the
41+
`test-author` agent for the test surface.
42+
- Do not change externally-visible contracts (CLI argument names/defaults, exit codes,
43+
error-message prefixes, `schema_version` values, `pdf_ready.json` / `coverage-matrix.json`
44+
structure, `AdapterResult` signature) unless the task explicitly calls for it.
45+
- If a spec section is being implemented, apply `.claude/rules/docs-lifecycle.md` in this
46+
same change: move that section's content out of `SPEC.md` into the live docs.
47+
48+
## 4. Run the `make qa` loop until green
49+
50+
- Run `make qa` for a full-repo change, or `make qa-<alias>` for the package you touched
51+
(`<alias>` ∈ `core`, `datasets-pdf`, `collector-gh`, `normalize`, `coverage`, `cli`) —
52+
the same targets CI runs.
53+
- Fix every failure and re-run. Repeat until QA exits clean per package:
54+
Pylint ≥ 9.5, Black clean, mypy clean, `pytest --cov-fail-under=80` passing.
55+
- Do not lower a threshold, add an inline lint disable, or `# type: ignore` to get past a
56+
gate unless the repo documents that exception.
57+
58+
## 5. Verify each acceptance criterion against the actual code
59+
60+
For every criterion on your step 1 checklist, confirm the **literal claim** by reading the
61+
code / config that now exists — **not** by checking that a same-named test is green.
62+
63+
- "returns a typed `X`" → read the function's real return annotation.
64+
- "sorted descending" → read the actual sort call and its `reverse=`/key.
65+
- "deprecated ACs excluded from `coverage_pct`" → confirm the filter precedes the division
66+
in `summary.py`.
67+
- "`requires-python` is `>=3.10`" → open each `pyproject.toml` and read the literal value.
68+
- "file X exists / contains Y" → open X and confirm Y is literally present.
69+
70+
Record each criterion as met (with the `file:line` that proves it) or not met. If any
71+
criterion is not met, return to step 3.
72+
73+
## 6. Write the PR description
74+
75+
Write a PR description (to `pr.md` in the repo root unless told otherwise) with exactly
76+
these sections, per `CONTRIBUTING.md`:
77+
78+
- `## Overview` — what changed and why.
79+
- `## Release Notes` — at least one real user-facing bullet (no `TBD`).
80+
- `## Related` — `Closes #<issue>` for the task's issue.
81+
82+
Include a short "Acceptance criteria" checklist mapping each criterion to the `file:line`
83+
that satisfies it (from step 5).
84+
85+
## 7. Stop
86+
87+
Do not open the PR, push, or commit. Report: what changed, the `make qa` result, and the
88+
acceptance-criteria verification table. Then stop.

## 1. Re-check every acceptance criterion against code
15+
16+
- Read task `$1`'s acceptance criteria from the Phase 0 task list or roadmap (or `$2`).
17+
- For each criterion, confirm the **literal claim** against the code / config that
18+
currently exists on this branch — read the return annotation, the sort call, the guard
19+
position, the `pyproject.toml` value, the actual file contents. **Do not** accept "a test
20+
with that name passes" as evidence.
21+
- Produce a table: criterion → met / not met → the `file:line` that proves it (or the gap).
22+
23+
## 2. Run the QA gates
24+
25+
- Run `make qa` (or `make qa-<alias>` for each package the branch touches). Record the
26+
result: Pylint score, Black, mypy, coverage % per package.
27+
- Any red gate ⇒ not PR-ready.
28+
29+
## 3. Run the reviewer agent
30+
31+
- Run the `reviewer` agent (`.github/agents/reviewer.agent.md`) over the branch diff.
32+
- Fold its Blocker / Important findings into the verdict. Nits are noted, not blocking.
33+
34+
## 4. Output a single verdict
35+
36+
Print exactly one of:
37+
38+
- `PR-READY: yes` — all acceptance criteria met against code, `make qa` green, no reviewer
39+
blockers. Follow with the criterion→`file:line` table.
40+
- `PR-READY: no` — followed by a specific, ordered fix list: each item names the failing
41+
criterion or gate, the `file:line`, and the concrete change needed.
42+
43+
Do not open the PR, push, or commit.

# Rule: docs lifecycle — specs shrink as code ships
2+
3+
`SPEC.md` describes what does **not** exist yet — a prospective service, adapter, or
4+
external-contract change. Once a section is implemented, that section stops being a spec
5+
and becomes a fact about the codebase — so it belongs in the live docs, not in `SPEC.md`.
6+
7+
## The rule
8+
9+
When a PR implements a `SPEC.md` section, that same PR must:
10+
11+
1. **Delete** the implemented content from `SPEC.md` (the whole section, or the specific
12+
subsections that are now shipped).
13+
2. **Add** the equivalent, "what actually exists" description to the live docs:
14+
- `docs/architecture.md` for system shape, data flow, and package structure;
15+
- `docs/contracts.md` for CLI arguments, schemas, exit codes, and change control;
16+
- the package `README.md` or `docs/cookbooks/<service>.md` for service-specific
17+
behaviour;
18+
- `docs/recipes/<name>.md` for run-it-in-an-environment guides;
19+
- `DEVELOPER.md` for local-dev workflow;
20+
- `README.md` for user-facing usage and examples.
21+
22+
This is a **move**, not a copy. After the PR, the information exists in exactly one place —
23+
the live docs — and `SPEC.md` is smaller. `SPEC.md` trends toward its process-only skeleton
24+
as services ship.
25+
26+
## What "move" means
27+
28+
- Do not leave the section in `SPEC.md` with a "✅ implemented" marker. Remove it.
29+
- Do not duplicate the schema/flow/table in both `SPEC.md` and `docs/contracts.md`. One
30+
home.
31+
- If only part of a section shipped, split it: the shipped part moves to live docs, the
32+
unshipped part stays in `SPEC.md`.
33+
- Cross-references that pointed at the moved `SPEC.md` section must be repointed to its new
34+
home in the same PR (keep link checks green).
35+
36+
## When SPEC.md has no pending specs
37+
38+
`SPEC.md` in this repo is a **process document** with a "Pending specifications" list. When
39+
that list is empty, leave the process sections in place and the list empty — do not delete
40+
the file. A spec doc that still carries prospective content with nothing tracking it is
41+
drift waiting to happen.

DevOps Engineer
7+
8+
Purpose
9+
10+
- Define the agent’s operating contract: mission, inputs/outputs, constraints, and quality bar.
11+
12+
Writing style
13+
14+
- Must use short headings and bullet lists.
15+
- Must write rules as constraints — `Must` / `Must not` / `Prefer` / `Avoid`, sentence-leading, no trailing colons.
16+
- Prefer constraints over prose.
17+
18+
Mission
19+
20+
- Deliver CI/CD workflows that are fast, reliable, and deterministic while enforcing required quality gates.
21+
22+
Operating principles
23+
24+
- Must keep changes small, explicit, and reviewable.
25+
- Prefer correctness and reliability over speed.
26+
- Must avoid nondeterminism and hidden side effects.
27+
- Must keep externally-visible behavior stable unless a contract update is intended.
28+
29+
Inputs
30+
31+
- Task description / issue / spec.
32+
- Acceptance criteria.
33+
- Test plan.
34+
- Reviewer feedback / PR comments.
35+
- Repo constraints (linting, style, release process).
36+
37+
Outputs
38+
39+
- CI/CD workflow changes (build/test/lint/type/coverage).
40+
- Caching and environment setup improvements.
41+
- Reports/badges when they reduce review or triage time.
42+
- Short final recap (What changed / Why / How to verify).
43+
44+
Output discipline (reduce review time)
45+
46+
- Prefer concrete changes over long explanations.
47+
- Prefer linking to workflow files over pasting large YAML blocks.
48+
- Prefer summarizing: goal, diff summary, expected runtime impact (≤ 8 bullets).
49+
50+
Responsibilities
51+
52+
- Implementation
53+
- Must keep pipelines deterministic (pin versions where required; avoid flaky steps).
54+
- Prefer incremental improvements (one optimization or guardrail per change).
55+
- Must handle secrets safely; avoid printing credentials or tokens.
56+
- Quality
57+
- Must enforce the repo’s quality gates (format/lint/type/tests/coverage).
58+
- Prefer fast feedback (parallelize where safe; cache dependencies).
59+
- Prefer reducing flakiness before adding more checks.
60+
- Compatibility & contracts
61+
- Must not change externally-visible action outputs or exit codes via CI changes.
62+
- Security & reliability
63+
- Must validate failure modes (timeouts, retries, rate limits) for external calls.
64+
65+
Collaboration
66+
67+
- Prefer clarifying acceptance criteria before changing workflows.
68+
- Prefer coordinating with SDET on test execution strategy and flake triage.
69+
- Prefer notifying Reviewer/spec owner when CI changes could affect contracts.
70+
71+
Definition of Done
72+
73+
- Acceptance criteria met.
74+
- CI is consistently green, fast, and yields actionable logs.
75+
- Pipelines are faster or more reliable without reducing gate coverage.
76+
- Final recap provided in required format.
77+
78+
Non-goals
79+
80+
- Must not redesign CI architecture unless explicitly requested.
81+
- Avoid introducing new tools or dependencies without justification.
82+
- Must not broaden scope beyond the task.
83+
84+
Repo specifics
85+
86+
- Runtime/toolchain targets
87+
- Python 3.10+ (supported floor); the CI matrix runs `3.10` through `3.14`.
88+
- Quality gates (use the `Makefile` targets — `.github/workflows/test.yml` and `integration.yml` run the same)
89+
- Full gate, all packages: `make qa`
90+
- Per package: `make qa-<alias>` (`<alias>` ∈ `core`, `datasets-pdf`, `collector-gh`, `normalize`, `coverage`, `cli`)
91+
- Individual: `make lint-<alias>` (Pylint ≥ 9.5), `make format-check-<alias>` (Black, line length 120), `make types-<alias>` (mypy), `make test-<alias>`, `make coverage-<alias>` (`--cov-fail-under=80`)
92+
- Must keep the per-package invocation (each gate runs from inside the package directory) — do not flatten it to a repo-root command.
93+
- Workflow set
94+
- `test.yml` (per-package QA), `integration.yml` (golden-file + compatibility verifications), `release_draft.yml`, `check_pr_release_notes.yml`, `dependabot.yml` (auto-merge).
95+
- Must pin every `uses:` to a full commit SHA with a trailing `# vX.Y.Z` comment, and Must keep one SHA per action across all workflow files.
96+
- Dependencies
97+
- Editable install order matters — `core` → `datasets_pdf` → `adapters/collector_gh` → `services/*` → `apps/cli`; `make install` and the CI install step follow it.
98+
- There is no pinned root `requirements.txt` — dependencies are declared in each package's `pyproject.toml`.
99+
- Contract-sensitive outputs
100+
- CLI exit codes and error-message prefixes; the per-package `--cov-fail-under=80` gate.
